Poosmate

You got it wrong again

I was merely pointing out that Khon Kaen city has a higher proportion of non Thais than HH. Therefore it seems logical that films would be shown in English to suit a mixed audience.

ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT????

Wow, it's crazy to think that here in Thailand they would show films with Thai dubbing. What is this world coming to? Alternatively you could always wait a couple of days after the release and buy it on DVD...

Dredging up this old thread because I read that Major Cineplex in Hua Hin is trialing movies with original English soundtrack starting today (27th). They are supposed to do it with "Meet the Parrents: Little Fockers" starting today and 3 other movies in February. The next movie is the Green Hornet on February 4th. Hope this is true and if so good news for those of us who were pushing for this.

This is supposedly a trial by the owners/managers to see if tickets for original soundtrack will sell so now is the time to go if you want this to continue in Hua Hin.

Here's the schedule and info:

Giving English movies a trial but doing no marketing. The suits as major cinema are either: a) Dumb as paint, b) Doing this because their Thai audience wants to practice English, c) Are out to prove, once and for all, that HH won't support English language offerings.

I'm left with a dilemma here. Do I support the trail and buy a ticket (then immediately tear it up so I don't have to see the third installment in a series that started as steaming human waste and has slid downhill at a rate that would astonish Newton) in the hopes that they'll screen Green Hornet next month or do I wait and download Green Hornet?

They are supposedly handing out fliers/cards in English at the front of the theaters to passers by to spread the word about the trial.

OKAY!

I was in Market Village recently and had a chat with the movie folks there, according them they will now show the occasional blockbuster film in English.

If you have free time the next one is scheduled to be The Green Hornet, showing tomorrow 3rd February 2010.
Be there or be goosed! :D

Local cinema showing some English language movies

Post by bapak »

Heard that the local HH cinema will be running some English movies this month on a trial basis. Not a movie goer myself but might be worthwhile checking it out... their site is: http://www.majorcine...anch=HUH&movie=

God god man! Getting through at least 2 movies a day and being 'fairly' in the know of all things movie related you are the first I have ever come across who regards 'Meet The Parents' as human waste. Obviously you are in the minority on this one but, to be honest, I didn't even think there WAS a minority regarding this movie. The whole thing is simply great, harmless fun! How the hell can you not enjoy harmless fun involving two greats of the movie world? Do you have a humour disability?

Not at all. Most people who get to know me say I'm one of the most spontaneously funny people they know. I don't find most mainstream comedies funny because I get the punchline / payoff while it's still being setup.

I don't find Ben Stiller funny. Couldn't stand his parents (comedy team Stiller & Meara) either. Ben is a straight man who wanders through movies being put upon, he's not a comedian. That worked in 'There's Something About Mary', his breakout role. Unfortunately for me, his subsequent comedic roles have him in roles where the 'put upon' quotient was turned up to 11.

Meet the Parents (MTP) was directed by Jay Roach. Liked only one of his films, the first Austin Powers, though his drama 'Recount' was as enjoyable as it was predictable.

That's also my problem with MTP and Ben: they're both excruciatingly predictable. Or just excruciating. Here are some one liners from critics on rottentomatoes.com that saw the film the same way I did:

"While it's a truism that all comedy has an element of sadism, it doesn't necessarily follow that all sadism is funny."

"Meet the Parents is a one- -- well, maybe two- -- joke idea that starts out goofy and fun, but soon runs out of verbal or visual ammunition."

"Does the usual Hollywood bit of setting up the gags way in advance so that even a coma patient can spot them."

"An unfathomably awful film that will undoubtedly be a smash hit."

Once again then I must stand corrected.

I am a pretty terrible critic of movies as I enjoy the majority of them so much. Rarely do I feel dissapointed after a film. I just thought the whole thing was great fun. Also am a huge fan of Ben Stiller so my thoughts are probably biase in a sense. 'Heartbreak Kid' I also though as a great bit of fun but I suppose you dislike this also? Each to their own.

I agree with E-Dork, (and we don't do that very often :o ), and thought MTP and MTF were great films for simple light-hearted comedy value. And I'm a funny guy for sure, people have laughed at me throughtout my adult life, and during the best part of my school days too come to think of it :?

But maybe you hit the nail on the head Homer about being 'put on', Only Fools and Horses is funny as hell to me and most Brits I think, but it's as predictable as anything I've seen regularly, with Rodney the young brother being put on. But it's some of the funniest stuff I've ever watched, and many of us will watch it over and over (same with Fawlty Towers), even though we can recite many of the lines here and now, so we know exactly what's coming up. Might be some perverse part of our psyche where many enjoy seeing others humiliated, because it's always funnier when there's a crowd in the scene witnessing the humiliation.

Agree about MTP being predictable though, when I watched it the third time I could just tell what was going to .......

Fawlty Towers
My favorite British TV series of all time... had the entire series (12 episodes) on tape and watched it over and over for years laughing every time. Too bad they didn't make more. I always suspected the reason was that they ran out of ways to rearrange the letters on the hotel sign at the beginning of the episodes. :D
