Terry: Just had a rethink with my addled brain, and I did actually have the Mk3 not the Mk4. So I'm totally with you on the beauty of that particular model. My twin sister, yes there are two of us (sort of) had a Mk2, which had the 1100cc engine, as opposed to my 'super-powered' 1300cc. Never had the nerve to get it up to 95mph though...

An early Citroen of some kind? It looks rather Citroenesque.

By the size it looks American, but has the steering wheel on the RHS so assume it is British?

It's American, I messed with the picture a bit to stop people using Google image search!

You managed that, but I'm having to use Google in a more conventional (i.e. slower!) way.

I'd plump for a custom Chrysler, but I won't go any further if you want to give the real non-googling experts a crack.

1940's Chysler. Thunderbolt I recon. I have a classic car book that has a picture of a white one on the front cover.
Does anyone else think the people in the picture posted here look far to serious for a car like this?

What a cool car.

The guy is called Ralph Roberts who designed the car and his wife and mother/MIL, it was labelled as "the car of the future". I guess like many things in life it's down to individual choice, but I think it looks hideous.

At the time it must have been really futuristic. One thing does make me wonder and that's the turning circle. Looking at the body work over hanging the front wheels, it must have been like turning an oil tanker.

Yes, it's a 1941 Chrysler Thunderbolt. Six of them were built and sent on a tour of Chrysler dealerships where they were a great hit but no one was prepared to pay to put the thing into production. Amongst other innovations, it was the first car with a powered folding hard-top.
Here is a surviving one now:

It was the TR7 and the Acclaim (a rebadged Honda Ballard) that brought the demise of Triumph.
As a matter of interest: I looked at a very nice Mk 3 Spitfire in Bangkok this morning. Fully restored inside and out, asking 800K Baht, but caveat emptor! (check under the bonnet!) :banghead:

That's big bucks for a small car.............

I would however be interested if I had the money - which I don't. :tsk:

So - back to reality
