Soi Sarawat is Soi 80, on the mountain side of Petchkasem. There is a 7-11 on the north corner of it. The name of the bar is 'Dick's Office' and it is about 100 - 150 metres up the soi on the left hand side, past Butterfly Rock (if you know where that is). Square D9 on the Hua Hin City Map.

Darn, I missed it. I have about three bags full ready to go, but no time today. And unfortunately, Dick's is nowhere near my usual stomping grounds. Wish we could set up something more "central" and more often?

Here's a though. . . if you own a bar or know an owner really well, it seems like it might be a bit of a draw to have a bookshelf set up for a book exchange in some unused corner. Good for advertising?

"Bar X features a Pool table, football on the telly, dart board and a book exchange!" Hey might bring in a couple of folks for a drink who would not otherwise darken your door.

But this is coming from someone who doesn't go into the bars along Bintabat and who admittedly doesn't know a thing about the business but what I see when I walk along that street.

Chas, we've met at previous swaps, and as you probably recall, I've been lumbered with holding the residue for the next swap. Mainly on the basis that I have the biggest box...

I have dozens of books sitting here waiting for next time. If you (or anyone else) get desperate, I have absolutely no objection to you coming round and taking what you want. I might even be able to provide a beer, or a coffee, but not a cup of tea. Drop me a PM if you're interested.

Phil, I remember that you got stuck with the "remnants."

That was a good swap though. Kept me in reading for weeks and I still have a couple that looked good at Dick's but that now keep moving to the bottom of the pile and I cant figure why I picked them up in the first place.

If someone took up my idea of setting up a permanent book corner, you wouldn't be saddled with that burden.

Thanks for the offer though. I got a recent supply of about a dozen good books through my spouse so I am set for a while. . .its the ones I have read that are piling up!

P.S. The book swap as it is seems pretty good, with the right people and the right attitude (chuck everything in the middle and take what you want - more coming every time and more welcome) - I suspect if there was a 'central depository' the supply would rapidly dwindle! Maybe I'm just a cynic...

I don't anticipate a flood of people coming round to my house, but I genuinely have no problem if someone can't get to a swap and needs some reading material.

Sorry to butt in here, but I've got some one hundred books. At the last count, fifteen are still unread. Some are good, some are not so and some are tremendous.
It's taken me ten years to get them collected and they sit on a bookcase in my front room.
These books all mean something to me, so I don't want a swap. I'll happily lend some out - as long as I get them back.
Hope that makes sense. It's just the way I feel.
I'm currently reading " Small Island" by Andrea Levy. A Jamacian man, amongst thousands, who willingly signed up for the RAF during WW2 to protect their Mother Country - England.
Read on when he goes back to London after the war and his wife later comes over to be with him.
Andrea Levy has done 1948 and the immigration of West Indians to the UK a great service. I never knew it was that bad.

Lomu, I'm not sure why you think you'd be butting in, this is hardly a closed topic (!), but I understand your dilemma perfectly. I have hundreds of books in my sister's loft in the UK, many from the Folio Society, which I promised myself I'd read or re-read 'one day'. Here, I have a few special books that I want to hang on to, but those I don't take to a book swap. Most of the reading I do here is easy on the brain. Mostly thrillers and the occasional historical novel, in the apparent absence of anyone who has fantasy or sci/fi, but I'm reading a biography of Elizabeth I at the moment, which is surprisingly reader-friendly, and I got that at the last swap.

I suppose basically, if you've got stuff you don't want to hang on to, take it to the swap, if you haven't, but you're prepared to lend to someone, 'up to you'...

I'd be interested to have a look at your copy of 'Small Island' some time. I grew up in south London in the early-mid 60s when there was a big wave of immigration from the West Indies. When I left my primary school it must have been about 50/50 black and white. The sight of a black face, a purple front door or a pink and lime green Ford Consul was not a major shock to my juvenile system, and I suspect that has stood me in good stead since.

Looking at some of the threads on here, you might want to have that book copied and circulated...

Having said all of that (at some length - sorry...), the way the book swap is going (and it's delightfully informal), I don't see any major problem if someone turns up with nothing, but takes a few - what goes around, comes around.

right at the back next to the computer cd shop.
walked pass and saw many second hand books, believe i saw book swap written there somewhere.

as i cant read or write, someone will have to go and confirm that im not making it all up.

Anyone up for a book swap in a couple of weeks? Elem will be back by then & able to attend her first one after putting the idea forward ages ago!

I'm thinking about the afternoon of Saturday 19th July, unless anyone has any objections. About 3pm would be great for me. Elem has offered her place (Khao Takiab) as a venue, or if preferred, we could go to Dick's Office.

Anyone interested? Which venue would be preferred generally?
