As always, great photo's and great reports

The LHG and myself will be taking my dear Mam through Yorkshire to see relatives and then on to Scotland for a tour. The places you've posted look wonderful, so could you give a slight hint as to where you were based (a promise we won't pile in on your friends for accommodation)!!

As an aside - are the "Northern Lights" viewable?

The closest reasonable-sized town to our base was Montrose (across the A90 and about 9 miles drive). Edzell was even closer but it is more of a village. No northern lights (also on my bucket list) as we were there in the summer, they're best viewed between late October and early March when skies are darkest.

Here is a map for those unfamiliar with the geography, it has labeled most of the places we visited in Scotland (blue dots).

Where is the north/south line separating the Highlands from I guess could be called the Lowlands?

Edit: Of perhaps the Highlands don't start until west of Loch Ness?

In terms of Scotch whisky classification, much further south ... we were in the highlands.

Oh my, that's a lot further east than I though it would be.

Edit: The two maps don't really agree with each other.

One is for Scotch regions, and the second is geographical and based on topography by the looks of it. I prefer the whisky one!

Thanks for that - I worked in Scotland a lot, but never knew the divide between low and high. I'd guess I spent most of my time in the highlands.

I must admit that I've spent a bit of time in Scotland and I always thought that the difference between the Highlands and Lowlands was more about up/down rather than North/South!
I was a year in Aberdeen and about eight months in Prestwick but it was all work and I didn't have much time to travel around.

A lot of my work was on Loch Gare and Loch Long. I was working at sea level, so never really thought about being in the highlands. I also did a few months at Beith, which seemed to be on top of the world, but that was lowlands.

I remember going to Glen Mallen on Loch Long back in the 80s with the Navy, we were operating helicopters off the back of the RFA Fort Austin.

That sounds right - the jetty right alongside the road, such was the depth of the loch.

I remember being shocked that such a large ship could go to a port with nothing there, you had to call a taxi from the MOD police post to go about ten miles to the nearest pub!

Yes, we usually stayed in Helensburgh or Balloch.
