Will the hi-tech cashless future leave a dinosaur like me behind?
Re: Will the hi-tech cashless future leave a dinosaur like me behind?
I again asked my caddie yesterday about tipping him and any others by phone. He said most can do it. However, the kiosks on the course don't have that facility.
As far as limits go, when I joined the golf course back in April, the membership fee was 20K THB more than was allowed by KBank on mobile banking. "No problem" the lady said, I can change the limit on your phone for you. I didn't have a problem with that as I've known her for years and I watched her doing things and she didn't see my log in. When I got back home, I changed the limit back to its original setting.
I'm a bit concerned about the kiosks though. I'm sure one of my playing partners would help me out for a few bottles of water but, if I'm not playing well, I'm not sure that their temporary help would extend to a crate of beer. In that case, cash is still king.

in defence of cashless transactions I can do everything from my phone, I have a record of where every baht went and the Kasikorn banking app is excellent. I get informed instantly of every transaction in and out .Banknotes on the other hand are often dirty or contaminated by god knows what, can get lost or stolen and are a big factor in the black economy. But each to their own.

Everyone which have a Thai bank account have their own QR code. The bank app generates your QR code and the person who will pay you just scan and send. I have done this multiple times myself.Big Boy wrote:As a follow-up to this, a friend of mine had to send a little cash to his girlfriend to pay for a passport. When he asked for her bank details, she sent him her QR Code via Messenger
I'm sure your caddies have the same.

I dragged myself screaming down to Kasikorn today to ask about mobile banking.
The girlie said, "That's easy - start by downloading the KPlus app."
I go in to Play Store and ask for KPlus - nothing. The girl takes my phone, but soon hands it back saying she doesn't know why it isn't there. She advised me to go down to the Samsung shop to ask why.
I walk down to the Samsung shop, handed my phone to the girlie, who smiled, and basically told me I was in a shop, not a museum. So I now need to urgently find another phone (similar spec because this one has been brilliant), and find it very quickly.
My current phone is obviously very apt for a dinosaur like me.

Haha. My other phone is a Samsung Hero - no touchscreen, no camera, no Bluetooth, nothing. I primarily keep it as a backup in the car, but it was a fun thing to pull out when the asked you to use your phone to scan at entrances to shopping centers towards the end of CoVid..

I'd need a new phone by tomorrow morning latest - I'm afraid to shop locally after several attempted rip-off experiences, and I don't do barter. Online shopping will take too long. Forget the future, I'll most probably have to remain a dinosaur.
I'll stick with cash and a pre-historic (not so) Smart phone.

Slightly different technology but I bought an iPad from the Banana outlet in MV and the price was little different than those advertised on Lazada - might be worth trying?Big Boy wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2024 1:35 pm I'd need a new phone by tomorrow morning latest - I'm afraid to shop locally after several attempted rip-off experiences, and I don't do barter. My DIL is just back from a couple of months away - hopefully, I will send her to find me a suitable phone. I don't need anything special - my needs are minimal. Operate mobile banking, and
support a compass
. She normally has a load of gifts bestowed upon her as well as a discounted phone. Totally the opposite to me going.

My Samsung is 7 years old and works fine with mobile banking and QR codes.
BB reminded me of the time I went to BKK bank as none of us could get the app working on my phone. The girl behind the desk told me that it was very easy. She tried and failed. After further discussion with other staff, it turned out that it was failing due to my passport number filed with the bank was out of date.
Updated my account which was quite a process just to change the passport, following that it worked fine and has ever since.
Just wondered if BB is having a similar problem with his 'old' phone. Is bank details correct? With BKK bank it wasn't obvious and required a few heads to think it through.

Oddly enough there was a report on the BBC news this morning regarding QR Code Scams in public areas - especially Car Parks, the majority of which no longer take cash in the UK. Obviously not restricted to Car Parks and a worrying aspect of a "Cashless Society".
This report dates back to July, but is very much relevant: -
"A further warning about fake QR codes on parking ticket machines has been issued after new stickers were found in numerous beach resort car parks.
The fake codes were put on parking meters in Sandbanks, Branksome Dene, Branksome Chine, Highcliffe and Bournemouth Town Centre car parks.
Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council said the stickers had been peeled off numerous machines in recent days.
When scanned the codes go to a fraudulent website.
Urging caution BCP Council said: "Please do not scan any suspicious looking QR codes on car parking meters and instead use one of our three parking apps to pay - PayByPhone, RingGo or JustPark."
It added there was a danger money could be taken from people's bank accounts if they visit the fraudulent website after scanning the fake QR codes."

I agree that the K-Plus app is very reliable, but I had the same problem as BB last September when K/korn sent me a text advising that my Huawei phone (running on Android 6) was longer secure enough for their updated app. On the 15th Sep the app had disappeared from my phone! I now have a Vivo phone running on Android 12 with no issues...

One thing that has been advised (at least in the UK) was using a dedicated QR Scanner (I often use on my "aged phone") rather than a "Third Party App". Perhaps only helping to see if the QR Code is genuine/not a Scam before going any further?Chazz14 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2024 9:06 pm I agree that the K-Plus app is very reliable, but I had the same problem as BB last September when K/korn sent me a text advising that my Huawei phone (running on Android 6) was longer secure enough for their updated app. On the 15th Sep the app had disappeared from my phone! I agree with what buks has said regarding Online Banking, but must admit I am weary of QR Codes...

The play store entry for kplus states that at least Android 9 is required. Android 9 was released in August 2018.Chazz14 wrote:I agree that the K-Plus app is very reliable, but I had the same problem as BB last September when K/korn sent me a text advising that my Huawei phone (running on Android 6) was longer secure enough for their updated app. On the 15th Sep the app had disappeared from my phone! You dont need to spend tens of thousands on a iPhart to do mobile banking, but the latest version of the bank apps do require a relatively up to date and secure version of Android which you may not have on a decade old phone.
You can get a very good spec device for around 6,000-7,000 baht these days, which should last at least 3 years. Get your hand in your pocket and drag yourself into 2024!
Edit: just read your post in the phones thread, enjoy the new tech.
