I'd go for the Nikon lenses although they are considerably more expensive than others such as Sigma.

For general every day shooting the 18-70 AF is a pretty good lens, and for telephoto something like a 100-300 would work.

I was tempted by one of these badboys but had to put it back after seeing the 43,500 baht price tag:

buksida :)

Thanks for that advice, I have enrolled in a photography course at the local college, as I am a beginner when it come to taking photos, and am only used to point and squirt picture taking.

However, as this camera runs at about £5,500 for the body plus another 3-5k for a 2 or 3 decent lenses and £600 for a decent flash unit and tripod, it will need some thought.
I am trying to convince wife to buy camera and lenses together, as a package. :) (well it is my birthday)

I'd want it to have legs, Walk about and take the pics for you for that money

Hellfire toads!! thats one hell of a system. I would be happy with a Canon D40 body £650 and a 24-70 L lens £799

Maybe one day, sigh... :|

For 5,500 quid I'd expect the camera and a naked woman in high heels and stockings as a bonus.

Sorry, too many Singhas tonight, about 10, I think.

 Literally.

Never mind Don. Maybe when you've been to college a few times, and have learnt what to do; maybe they'll let you trade it in for a decent model :D

Thanks for that BB :D

Yes it's a lot of money for something that fits in your hand but I have had several relatively cheap cameras in the past and now I have time on my hands I want to purchase something that will not be considered outdated in a weeks time.

I have read a few reviews by the pro's and I'm confident it will suit my needs for the next few years.
If it turns out to be a pile of crap, I will take your advice and "trade it in"

The Fichek Monkey belongs to a monk at Wat Monkol, Apparently it comes from Burma where the mother was killed, Loads of Thais taking pictures i stayed back until the crowds dissapeared as it didnt like too many people coming too close to it and crowding it, I didnt see any Elephant fondling like mentioned in another post but people seem to think its lucky walking underneath it.

The last pick is of Erik a Danish resident in Samorpong.

The village pics were taken in Khong village in Nakhon Ratchisima, Home of a really nice Thai family i had the fortune to stay with.

Samsung TL225 Camera Sports 2 LCDs

Samsung TL 225

Samsung has unveiled dual-screen digital cameras that make it easier for people to take pictures of themselves alone or with friends.

The TL220 and TL225, introduced Thursday, come with a 1.5-inch LCD on the front and a touch screen on the back. The front display lets the photographer see what the camera sees in positioning the device for a self portrait or when mugging for the camera with pals.

Another ease-of-use feature is activating the camera's self-portrait mode by a single tap on the back LCD. The cameras' smile detection technology makes it possible for photographers to take pictures of themselves by simply tapping and smiling, according to Samsung.

Both cameras have 12.2-megapixel sensors, a 4.6x lens, and a 720p video recorder. The TL225 has a 3.5-inch wide touch screen in the back, while the TL220 has a smaller 3-inch display. Both cameras have a 27-mm wide-angle Schneider Kreuznach lens.

Along with the dual-screen cameras, Samsung also introduced the CL65, which has a global positioning system that tags pictures with location and time information for organizing photos later. In addition, the camera supports Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless technology. The latter makes it possible to upload pictures and video directly to social-networking sites, such as Facebook and YouTube.

Other features include a 12.2-megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom, a 27mm wide-angle Schneider Kreuznach lens, 720p video recorder, and 3.5-inch touch screen.

All three cameras are scheduled to be available in September. The TL220 and TL225 will sell for $300 and $350, respectively, and the CL65 will sell for $400.

Samsung and rivals recently pushed the envelope in camera phones with the introduction of 12-megapixel cameras, the highest-resolution available in phones.

This is a bit of a broad post, so I thought I'd resurrect this old thread instead of starting a new one.

I want to buy a new digital camera in the next few weeks but having never bought one for years (or in Thailand), am not sure where to start. I need a really basic point and shoot effort, for holidays, nights out etc... Won't be doing any fancy photography (or enlarging pics), so from what I've read on this thread already, something with 6 or 7 mega pixels would do. Battery life is obviously important as is the memory card.

So can I get something that fits the bill for around 6,000 baht or less? Had a quick look in a shop window today and saw a Canon Cybershot (can't remember the model and the spec wasn't visible) for as low as 2,990 baht. Any specific make and model recommendations as to what's decent in my price range and a good shop in Hua Hin to buy from?

Also, does Hua Hin have such a thing as January sales?

Thanks in advance.

I've got a little Sony Cybershot 10.1 megapixel. It's excellent for point and shoot photography. Because its only 10.1 megapixel, they're being virtually given away at well under £100 in the UK at the moment.

Probably not much in it but I'm still happy with a Panasonic Lumix bought over 2 years ago. They are also now available for under £100 in the UK.
To me the whole point of a compact digital is that it's ultra portable, which of course means that it's also more at risk of being lost/nicked, and I wouldn't want to be carrying anything more expensive around on a regular basis.

The wife bought these 2 little cameras today to take to Thailand for the little nieces.

The Fuji film is 12.2 MP with 3x optical zoom for £79 inc 2 GB SD card

The Hitachi is 10MP with 3x optical zoom for £68

Both inc all the software/connectors and cases etc.

I think they will be fine for the kids to learn on.

As BigBoy says "they are giving them away here" :)

Mags, those are great cameras. I read camera reviews on many dedicated photography sites and Panasonic continually climbs the list in quality vs price.

I have one of their 12X super zooms and my wife has the pocket variety that fits nicely in her purse and we love them both. :thumb:

If I were in the market for another camera now it would either be a Panasonic Lumix or a Canon.
