Yes, I know, but driving in Thailand is becoming such a pain, I've basically decided to drive this one into the ground, and calling it a day. I don't enjoy driving any more and especially parking. There are huge areas of Hua Hin I just won't travel to any more because parking is impossible. Taxis are cheap enough, and much cheaper than buying/maintaining a new car. I don't need the hassle of driving amongst idiots at my age any longer. Walking more will do me the world of good.

My wife has a little electric 3 wheeler to take her to all local amenities - why do I need a car? Actually, there is one reason, and that is football. Travelling Ratchaburi to Hua Hin at 9pm is not easily doable, but doing the trip by taxi will cost 30,000฿/year - its a no brainer really.

That is a definite NO. The Ranger is big enough - why have they even considered making it even wider with stupid plastic add-ons? The proverbial prick extentions. You've driven up my road and know the idiot parking, coupled with gates being left open into the road. Having an even wider car would see me having to park at the end of the Soi and walking.

Even now, I must have to make people move their vehicles at least once a week to give me access.

I know there’s a time when all of us will need to decide about “hanging up our keys”, but I’m trying to delay that decision as long as possible. I very rarely do anything further than a trip into Hua Hin (about 65kms return) or Petchaburi (about 85 kms return) and unless absolutely necessary I will do those journeys in daytime hours.

In true cost terms I agree that using taxis would work out considerably cheaper than buying and running a car, but the flexibility of being able to do any journey without the need to plan in advance is still precious and appreciated - I’m hoping it’ll be some time before I have to rethink that decision.

With the likes of Grab and Bolt, there is very little planning involved.

Don't get me wrong, I have no fear of driving here, but it is just becoming worse and worse. Maybe I'm suffering post Idiot (High) Season blues, but at this moment in time the prospect of continued driving is starting to P me off.

During my recent trip to Mukdahan, I really enjoyed driving the Honda City, and as I was limping home on Thursday was even considering treating myself. Then I started thinking why? There's a huge difference darting around the roads in Mukdahan to driving here with all of the idiot motorcycles. It just seems crazy paying a lot of money to extend that agony.

Already, if we go out in the evening, I usually leave the car home and either walk or take a taxi. I'm not an idiot cheapskate who would rather risk my own life or the lives of others by drink driving (yes, it always happens to others - many convince themselves they drive better when drunk). Only Thursday night I was sat at Cheers. At the end of the evening a guy walked up to his scooter, got on, did a U-turn (passing within inches of my son) and found himself laying in the road under his scooter. People got him out, and back to the bar where they gave (probably sold) him a bottle of water. He drank the water, got on his bike and drove home. Just after, we (3 of us) flagged down a passing tuk-tuk and went home - cost 100฿ (less than 35฿ each). Yes, the bike was convenience, but could be a very false economy.

I'm afraid my days of driving in lala land are fast coming to an end, and I think I'll be happier for it. It will be my choice. I will renew my driving licence next month, so I will have the choice of changing my mind. In the meantime, my car is still working - it has been well maintained, and could still go on for a few years yet. We will have to wait and see. I see little point in replacing it to prolong the agony.

Maybe living out of the main areas is a bigger bonus than I appreciate and as previously mentioned I doubt that I go to Hua Hin even once a month. As for drinking and driving, that’s something I never do (by that I mean the most I would ever drink and drive home is one beer). I guess that linked to living out of the main areas also means that it’s probably not quite as easy to get a taxi, although I say that without any knowledge having never tried!!

No, you are right, a taxi in rural areas is nigh on impossible.

LOL - one beer is one more that I'd ever have before driving. I'm not sure if I mentioned it on here or in the moderator's section, but I was arriving home very late after being in Bangkok to watch the footie - about 2am, from memory. I got to the semi-roundabout near the old Hua Hin Station, when there was a road block - no triangles, so not sure if official.

1st officer waved me through, but then a second stopped me. He asked how many beers I'd had, to which I replied none. He wasn't having that, and suggested 3, to which I said none. He then suggested 2, to which I said none. He was determined to get me for something, and suggested none. Well he was close enough, and I did what with hindsight was something very stupid, I blew in his face and asked if it smelt as if I'd been drinking. I knew as soon as I'd blown, it was the wrong thing to do, but I think my halitiosis stunned him , and he waved me through. That could have made headlines during Covid, but I was just so P'd with the guy. I wanted to get home. I try not to give them any excuse.
