Last Friday afternoon (27 December) I renewed my five-year license at the Cha-Am office. This is what was required:

1. A Resident letter from Immigration. Got that in the morning on the same day as my renewal. Immigration required two pictures. A very easy process.
2. A Medical certificate. Got that the day before at a Cha-Am clinic for 80 baht. I heard that it could be dated up to 15 days before renewal, but I won’t swear that is accurate.
3. Proof of completion of the online video course. Did that the morning of my renewal and printed the required document. Video takes about one hour and has several easy questions you must answer at the end of the video – take note of the questions asked while watching the video.
4. Pass a simple color test using yellow, red and green lights, and a simple test where you step on a gas pedal, and when the light turns red, you hit the brake pedal. It measures how long you take. I didn’t see anyone fail this test.

I did my renewal without an appointment, but I got the impression that they preferred you have an appointment. I now have a license valid until my birthday in 2030.

Hope this helps.

I forgot to add that the DL office also wanted a signed copy of the data page of my passport and a signed copy of my passport page showing my latest extension.

The only difference I can add is that I have a yellow book for where I live and they accepted that as proof of address with no need for anything from immigration

Thanks so much . . this is exactly what I needed to see. I will get the medical cert today and try to make an appt for the 13th. And watch the video. Seems easy enough. Again thanks. This is why I treasure this forum . . .it has helped me a lot through the years.

Does anybody know how long before renewal date can you actually renew your driving licence please?

I am in the process of hiring a car in Isaan for March, and part of the hire process says I must have 6 months validity on my licence. My licence expires on 30 April this year.

I don't know how long in advance you can renew, but it is possible to renew for 6 months after expiry. On a side note the exp date is your birthday, so if you renew a few days after expiry (like I have done the two last times), you get 5 years and the number of days until your next birthday after that, nearly 6 years instead of only 5 if you renew before expiry.ImageImage

Yes I think the renewal after your birthday is a fairly well known fact that has been mentioned many times on the Forum, and on that basis, it’s probably why nobody renews their licence early - if there’s no answers forthcoming looks like a visit to the Licensing Office BB!!

Thanks for your replies guys, but panic over. The car hire company have just phoned me to say they would accept my current licence, so I will renew on my birthday, as per usual.

I was going to say....who the hell are they to make their own 6 month rules like that, and why? Of course they can do what they want, and also lose customers and reputation! :banghead:

Whoops - I've just booked my appointment to renew my licence, which expires tomorrow. First available date is 21 May

I always knew there was a dress code, but this is the first time I've seen it in writing (I have never adhered to the dress code previously):

I guess its time to get my best frock out of the wardrobe.

I've always worn decent shorts, a short-sleeved shirt, and some nice sandals. I never had any problem with that, and I feel many others also have the same type of clothes.

I always go to the Cha-Am office because everything has always worked smoothly there, which is not my experience with the Pranburi office. Maybe my clothing is to blame?

I have dressed similarly everytime at Pranburi as well in the past with no problem. It is the fact they actually publish a dress code now, which I actually have a problem with. "Wear well covered shoes." I have been told I must wear open toed sandals by the medics here. OK, I do posess a normal pair of shoes, and will wear them for this farce, but I do worry about the reaction test with proper shoes on. My legs are already a lot longer than a Thai's legs, and wearing shoes will constrict my movement even further - I hope I fit.

I definitely wore smart cargo shorts that come down to the knee with a collared short sleeve shirt and sandals with Velcro straps - no problem at all.
