Thankfully pharvey will be nowhere near the place.

The top one is exactly the same kind of slimeball (Giant Siamese Carp) that you caught during the forum meet.

ONLY IT'S BIGGER

'Strange' fish caught in Phitsanulok

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/3 ... -nan-river

Published: 10 Apr 2013 at 17.14
Online news: Local News

Fishermen on the Nan river in Phitsanulok's Prom Piram district were astounded when a large, odd-looking fish was caught near the shore on Wednesday.

Somjit Chodchoey, 59, said he and his brother Dao Promkong put out baits on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday morning he discovered a strange looking fish caught on one of the bait hooks.

Mr Somjit said it looks like a cross between an alligator and a fish, is about 1.5 metres long and weighs more than 10 kilogrammes.

His neighbours came to look at the fish after the news spread in the area.

Issara Suwittayaporn, a fishery scientist, went to view the strange catch and said he thought it was an alligator gar (atractosteus spatula). They are mostly found in the Amazon region of South America, he said.

Mr Issara said it was possible the fish was raised by a private collector who decided to release it after it grew too big.

He said the alligator gar is large, long-lived, eats small fish and birds, and can produce many offspring. The ecosystem could be affected if there were many of them in the Thai natural habitat.

Malee Promkong, wife of fisherman Dao, said the fish would not be harmed.

"it will be sold or given to fishery officials if they come to take it," she said.

Yes Pete

I've known that these fish have been irresponsibly released into the wild here in Thailand for some time.

We have several of them at the Lodge and as you can see they grow to a respectable size..........

I saw a really amazing thing happen while I was fishing yesterday at the lodge. Fishing diagonally across from me were 3 men. 2 were having some success, but the 3rd was not getting anything - not even a bite. His line was out, but I think he must have been concentrating on the bottle in his hand. Then it happened, his rod went for a swim when a rather large fish took his bait. The 3 guys were distrought.

Not phased by this, one of Terry's baitmen walked to the tackle hut and came back with another rod. He didn't put bait on the line, but walked about 10 yards up the bank. Cool as a cucumber, he simply cast the line. As he wound it in, he managed to snag the missing rod, and brought it in. He handed the wet tackle back to the very happy man, who then went about bringing in his fish.

Absolutely amazing.

Hi BB

Glad my guys are doing their job! 8)

These incidents occur fairly regularly and are usually caused by a combination of inattentive fishermen with the drag setting too tight on the reel.

I've often said that there appears to be no finesse with Thai fish - when they take the bait - they take it fast.

To the best of my knowledge there are only 2 rods on the bottom of the upper pond that have not been recovered in the 8 years that we have been open.
