I lived in a suburb, East of Athens and in Piraeus for 14 months. Didn't get to Rhodes. There was enough variety and musical work to keep me happy. Then, at the end of '63 the govt., as usual, fell and it was time to leave. I suppose I'd better say something about food, before the censors leap in. There's a Greek restaurant in Bangkok, near Ekamai, just off Soi 12. I think it's called The Olive. The owner is a delightful Greek woman and if you speak a few words of Greek, you're treated like family.

I´ve tried Hummus making and this recipe, without Tahini works a treat. Everything is easy to source and basically you just blend everything together, I´m a complete dunce around the kitchen and even I found it easy. It´s also a much richer taste than the Hummus I normally buy in the supermarket.

Simple Hummus Without Tahini

Ingredients
1 (15 oz.) can garbanzo beans (chickpeas), drained and rinsed
2 to 4 tbsp. water
2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 tbsp. lemon juice
1 garlic clove minced
3/4 tsp. ground cumin
1/4 to 1/2 tsp. salt

Instructions
Add the garbanzo beans, 2 tablespoons of water, the olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, cumin, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to a food processor. Process until smooth and creamy. If needed, add additional water to thin out the hummus and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to your taste preference.
Store covered in the refrigerator.

Actually it all went very well (aside from the rugby later on... ) - thanks for asking and I didn't have the octopus thrown at me (hard or otherwise)!

With regards to the octopus, after going through a multitude of recipes and recommendations (thanks again guys), I decided on the following which to me was the easiest and worked very well!

Shop bought marinade/sauce (in this case, sweet chilli, coriander, lime). Next time I'll go for a Thai dressing!!
A little garlic added...
Marinade octopus for 1.5 hrs plus wrapped tightly in foil. Longer probably better, but I was on a deadline...
Steam octopus (in foil) for +/- 1.5 hrs.

Came out very tender!

The (Cornish) "Fruits der Mer" was good, but the "dressed crab" a let down - I've learned a lesson and will certainly go for the likes of crab claws next time.... As always, the seafood doesn't compare to what we've bought from the HH market - oh, the prawns!! Hope to get back there soon!!

I do not know how close you live to a fishing port. We buy our fish and crabs fresh, tastes 100% better than anything from a supermarket. If you try to souce fresh fish, you may be lucky!! it will be worth it.

Oh for sure it was better than the supermarket, as it was delivered "fresh", although.....

This was bought online from https://thecornishfishmonger.co.uk/ which I found the quality very good - I've just been spoilt in South Africa and Asia... UK seafood can be superb - I just want to see/EAT large prawns and muscles...

As to local/fresh seafood, I totally agree - Bristol, Cardiff & Swansea (all fairly close) have superb markets.... Pretty much all closed down to us at the moment unfortunately.

[EDIT] Well, Swansea is an hour away but IMHO one of the best markets I've been to.
