It would seem to me that as long as the immigration rules and cost stay reasonable, a good percentage of retired expats will stay here to the end.

If immagration becomes a huge hassel with lots of cost many will say they don't want to have to deal with it and leave for friendlier places. The hassel would cause me to leave much faster than the cost would.

Hopefully it will all stay reasonable and we can just stay here and ignore the rest of the world and it's problems.

Hi Sarge

I had the original Don Mclean album (LP); it was the 'American Pie' one and 'Vincent' was one of the songs. Gosh, that goes back years!

Norm, I crossed the line when I got permanent residence - it alleviates a lot of other immigration hassles. In fact, looking at my (expired) passport, I note that the PR had been backdated to the original entry date on the application visa, which was the 29th August 1988. So in about two weeks, I will have been officially here for twenty years!

Must have a beer or three to celebrate

This thread has drifted off track slightly so...
I would have been interesting to have seen this as a poll question but I suppose it would only have given us a slight indication as to the real answer. Being as we are but a small toad in a vast pond.
Its always very sad to think that at a later stage in life (buksida accepted) we make what we think will be the big decision only to see it fold before us like an old copy of 'Hare and Hound'. Of course thankfully this is not always the case and a lot of us will still pursue the dream and triumph, as well as a fair few after us I dare say.
You only get one life (trumpet fanfare) so what the hell, just remember that old adage 'Its better to have loved and lost, than never to have sunk a pint of real ale' Hurrah...

This debate has intrigued me because I expected the main thrust for people returning would be boredom. It is a phenomena in the UK people just don’t realize that going from an active full time working environment leaves a very large number of hours to fill .TV golf gardening and the backyard shed will fill some of it but even those activities back in the UK seem to pale after a while and many drift back into part time or voluntary work.
The problems associated with filling time for a long period are greater here as part time work brings visa problems and all sorts of other questions to say that there is not a lot of it about is an understatement. Studies show that very few people give enough thought as to how they are going to pass their time
As in my case my heart problems have made filling time more difficult as I cant get out to much but I am doing fine but how do others in my condition handle the boredom.
To adjust to my health and fill my time I have increased the things I can do
I make 3 loaves of bread a week
I make hot cross buns once a month
I bake in my Brit style oven twice a week
I make my own Sausages twice a month
I cut my own Bacon (wrong word really belly pork sliced thin) on my bacon slicer
And I make honey steamed pudding and pancakes for the kids the biggest being me with a drizzle of honey and a gob of cream
I grow orchids
And I help Mrs Sarge with her business light work only I may add (wish I could do more)
Spend time on HHAD talk to my sister daily on msn msgr and a game of bingo
I am not going anywhere as I have always been able to fill my time
:D :D

Vincent Wow 20 years, that is impressive. I imma gin you have seen some huge changes in that time. Hope you enjoy the next 20 just as much.

Sarge How do you keep from weighing 200Kilos with that much baking??

I have osteo arthritis in my back which give me problems if I do to much, so between that and the gout my exercise is very spotty. To keep busy I spent a lot of time reading and even more making fishing lures. I like to use my hands and don't watch much TV.

Have been retired now for 24 years and have got the hang of it, rarely get bored. If I can't sleep I watch TV and that puts me to sleep in no time.

Good luck with your heart problems. Don't want to lose one of our more interesting posters.

I cant see the situation that would ever make me want to permanently go back to the UK again. I dont think HMs IRS and the banks would be welcoming for a start if y know what I mean ;-)

There is nothing there that I cant get or obtain here, whereas there are a lot of things here that are downright impossible to get back there....a suntan for a start :thumb:

If, god forbid, I ever did get sick of LOS then there are a long long list of places Id run to first....the way I feel about the UK it will be a cold day in hell before I'd return there other than by necessity. Like I've said before Id rather be a stranger in a strange land than one in my own.

I guess that puts me in the False camp

For me coming to TL has turned into a matter of life and death.

If I had developed the condition I have now where I came from I would have been put on a waiting list for 6 to 12 months and in that time it would have progressed to an untreatable stage and it would have only been a matter of time before I died of it.

Here I have got immediate treatment that by my research is up with the best in the world and the prognosis is for a complete recovery.

Add to that that I have insurance that will cover the majority of the treatment. I would not have had that if I was not here.

Thanks Thailand

I will be here as long as the money lasts, but whare will I go then? back to winters, dont think so.

Sarge

I just look on it as being a bit behind on my payments to the tax men and a card company..... Im sure they wont agree.

when Tony and Georgey started picking fights with madmen I thought "Sod this buy your own bullets....anyway chase that sod Murdoch...he owes you more"..... seems reasonable to me

the card company/bank blatantly lied to me a few times.....dropped me in it whilst working abroad too....I tried to play the game, they kept shifting the goalposts......so sc**w them :cuss:
