I agree 100% with bill.
All other cities in Thailand is a piece of cake when driving your car, Bangkok is living hell and I hate to drive there.
God, how fun it is when you have to change from left lane to right lane, the traffic moves slower than a sprinting turtle and you must cross 4 packed lanes to reach your goal!!
The motorways are ok though.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

look at it as an adventure !! and experiance !!! and a challenge !!! just because your experiances are bad doesnt mean other peoples will be
the simple answer is if you dont know your way around dont go !
if you do intend to drive any where take a map and allow time to get lost ..
if you do get lost look for land marks a good one is bayoke tower and head for it you cant miss it its F in huge....

dr: oh yeah dr. smartypants we had a map, we had that big bridge as a target, we drove under the bridge and much later wound up under it again. But maps, no maps, tea leaves, `rabbit feet, voodo chants,[take my first son god just get us out of here], ladyboy diet pills, YOU ARE STILL LOST. and remember this is not Leeds were talking but a huge city that contains 10millon people who don't know your lingo. And folks getting off an airplane generally want to just arrive, no hassles. Anyway dr. i have decided to challenge you to a duel. Beer or wine?

I will accept, but my alcohol tollerance is low these days .
But could we possibly have beer as well as wine, red and white chasers ?

The looser has to navigate (by Car) to a chosen place in BKK

Well I didn't get lost once :D .

Picked up the car from Budget at BKK airport on Friday (guy was there to meet us at arrivals). He gave great instructions on how to get to Hwy4. They provided a map which also had detailed instructions about how to get back to the airport.

Drove to HH, left again on Monday and drove back to the airport. Drove all around the area while we were there.

Great fun. Admit I didn't tangle with Bangkok "centre ville" but the traffic was fine and certainly no worse than many other places in S E Asia. In fact I have been far more scared driving in Penang.

Whole thing only costs a bit more than a taxi both ways and the extra freedom would have been worth paying a lot more.

If you are thinking about hiring a car rather than taking taxis - just do it is my advise. A good map and a bit of planning and you will be fine.

Cheers
