and if they have short-time rooms upstairs can they serve alcohol because they qualify as a hotel?

Anyone venture into town last night? I heard Murphys and Limelight were open. Any others?

No, but they do qualify as emergency services...

Very quiet, disappointing. I expected to see a lot of people in restaurants, at BKP and see the beer garden at Binta open, as there are some food stalls around.

Being virtually tea-total, I managed to resist 1st night re-opening hype, and nipped out for half a gallon of the black stuff last night instead.

After all of the hype, the bar was surprisingly quiet, but a steady turnover. It seems many were still suffering after Monday’s re-opening festivities.

Thai Chana, temperature check and hand wash as you go in, but no immediate noticeable differences. As the eyes started to focus on the detail, I realised a couple of tables had been removed to allow better social distancing, and the older tables now had tablecloths. All staff wore masks. I’d never considered the bar to be dirty, but it just felt cleaner. A lot of care was taken cleaning tables as customers left. From what I could see, all customers had a meal with their beer, but we ordered drinks first, and food much later - I'm not sure whether food was a condition of buying alcohol. However, the staff do know us, and we usually eat when we visit.

At no time did we feel any encroachment on our personal space. I don't drink often, but it felt good that the option was back if I wanted it.

I've put myself back into lock down. I'd forgotten how bad a hangover can be!!

Hua Hin bars request permission to reopen on trial basis

In what could set a precedent for the rest of the country, representatives of bar owners in Hua Hin, accompanied by the Mayor of Hua Hin, have submitted a request to authorities, requesting permission to reopen for a trial period. Citing the apparently successful suppression of the Covid-19 virus around Thailand, and the fact that most other businesses have been allowed to reopen, Hua Hin’s bars are promising to adhere to rigid hygiene and social distancing measures.

The seaside resort on the Gulf of Thailand has about 300 nightlife establishments, normally employing around 1,500 workers, all of whom are currently jobless. The president of the Hua Hin Beer Club, Ms. Punyanuch Woranuch, says they have agreed strict rules and hygiene measures for customers, in addition to those already laid down by the government. She says all customers would be required to sign in and wear face masks, as well as observing social distancing rules. Premises would be disinfected hourly and all bars and pubs have agreed they would close at 10.00pm during the trial period.

A report in The Pattaya News says the Mayor of Hua Hin, Nopporn Wuttikul, appears to back the request, and has agreed to present it to the provincial governor for submission to the Thai Government. As the country is still under Emergency Decree laws, such a request can only be granted with permission from the government’s Covid-19 task force. Were this to happen, it sets a precedent for the rest of the country, and it would seem highly likely that other tourist hotspots, not least Pattaya and Phuket, would submit their own requests.

I cut my drinking by half when lockdown finished here in Europe. When you go out you have to do things like walk, talk to people, go home and stuff like that, drinking at home, alone requires none of this.

Pattaya officials threaten bars masquerading as restaurants with closure

Following a number of inspections at various restaurants in the Pattaya area, police have cautioned venues whose primary business is selling alcohol. In what may also serve as a warning to businesses in the rest of the country, Pattaya authorities are threatening some establishments with closure unless they meet the criteria for reopening. These include only serving alcohol to customers who are having a meal and ensuring social distancing rules are adhered to.

Seems a lot of bars are now suddenly starting to serve up food as a way to ‘comply’ with the current restrictions.....

The bar owners are going to make sure all the patrons wear masks? That should make for interesting eating and drinking. Another good reason to stay at home.

Are any places open on Soi 80 for food & drink?

I read on Facebook that Bar 80 at the Phetkasem Road end has reopened. It is a Bar/restaurant/hotel. I have yet to visit myself, but they have posted on Facebook that they are now open.

Riding around a bit in the evening shows more and more bars open/or appear to be opened in the Soi 94 area. Drink & Shelter 94, the new bar opposite the thai boxing gym in soi 94, Mucky duck I've seen open, Atmosphere, some other in the street between the intersection of El Toro Loco/Pizza Garden and Baan Khun Por. I've also seen a couple of bars open in Soi 88. How, why and allowed etc. etc. etc. beats me, since none of these places I mention above imo would be considered restaurants, and bars are stil prohibited for opening.

On a side note: In Pattaya they are very strict. I know a couple of bars/restaurants/guest houses which mainly operates as bars but have all licences(bar/restaurnt/hotel/guest house). They opened but were forced to close down within a day of opening, reasons given that all places with "bar" in the name and previously operated mainly as bars are not to be considered restaurants!
