As my late father used to own a rendering plant some years ago ( which is where processed ' dog food ' is sourced )---
I decided never to feed my dogs Anything but what I cook for them - ( loads of fresh offal meats here in Thai pork shops - chicken breast ,hearts, pork hearts,tongue etc mixed with rice and some veg )
Rendering plants take in a lot of Waste material from meat and other industries along with Dead and Diseased farm animals - all pulverized and cooked at very high temperatures - (which takes away most existing nutrients )
(And God only knows what goes into a thai rendering plant before it ends up in a thai store as dog food )
The Rendering plant product is Then mixed with smelly flavours to entice the dog to eat what is basically worse that cardboard
It's not much more expensive to feed dogs a home prepared food diet that all the high priced junk that pet stores sell

Never mind the dog I was brought up on offal in the 50’s and 60’s, roast ox heart w/ sage and onion stuffing, roast potatoes and veggies at the weekend was a real treat, ox tong made fantastic sandwiches, roasted sheeps brains, and my very favorite was cows tripe and onions…back to topic our dogs eat anything we eat and have shiny coats and moist black noses, no pedigree chum in our house

We give our dog white rice occasionally, she does like it, I know brown is more nutritional but we don't eat it.
They shouldn't be fed rice every day. White contains a lot of starch (carbohydrate), no fibre, and can give them constipation, but it's very settling for the stomach. Brown is a bit better on the starch, fibre and also protein fronts, but still not a daily food I think.
Sadly I don't even have a dog but I'm enjoying reading this thread and picturing all your lovely canine companions (I think I need to get out more) and I'm wondering if alternating rice with cooked oats could be something to try. Just looked up a few sites and general consensus is a moderate quantity of oats is good for them - stomach soother, helps the immune system, better than rice for blood sugar levels (diabetes) etc. But apparently only one tablespoon of cooked oats per 20lb weight of dog is recommended, so probably not much help in bulking out meals but maybe worth considering if made into a kind of congee with fish bits/meat and vegs, and bags of the stuff are readily available here, easy to store and very cheap.

My three Thai dogs are all adopted strays and they already have a better life than me without feeding them on steak or whatever, there is a business near my home which is a kennel called "Doggy Paradise" and they couldn't even be bothered to walk that far, they're too busy staring at their bowls waiting for dinner to arrive!

Our adopted strays are the opposite. They gulp maybe half their food and run to the door knowing a walk on the beach follows. My wife is always yelling "Eat more you'll be hungry later" and stirring their food for them to eat more

I love it how how dogs show their personalities and enthusiasm for the things they love most in life and it's so good to see them happily sniffing out the exact same places every day as excited as a kid having its first day out at Thorpe Park.
By the way, has anyone seen the big fat scarred mangey mushroom-coloured 7-Eleven dog recently that hung/hangs out by Manee's on 112? I'm away too often to keep a pet but I love her, even if she's not particularly receptive to fond attention and is a bit of an ingrate and fussy about food offerings, and I always want to whisk her back to my place (ha, no way could I heave her bulk into the back of my Honda). She's clearly not exactly starving and may be 'ugly' and look like a tapir but I would call her Brenda and train her to keep still in the evenings so she could double up as a coffee table as well as being my companion. Sigh, I wish I could have a rescue dog...

I had a two bay carport built this year and the dogs were sleeping in it before the builder had finished loading his tools, now every time I drive in there I get a look like "We were here first, go find your own place........... Is it dinner time?".

They would get quite a choice of food if they managed to sneak into Doggy Paradise to Nick any - Every dog there has to bring their own food ( I know as I've left my dogs there - it's a fab place by the way run so professionally by a Swiss lady called Monica )
