Wai-ing
I learnt a long time ago - the higher the Wai - the greater the respect.
In my past life here working on a project with SRT, I used to travel around quite a bit with one of the Deputy Governors. As such he used to get the utmost respect and everyone Wai'd to the hilt. He was almost dismissive.
Until one day I saw hime return a Wai to an old local Railway engineer who was way down the pecking order compared to him.
When I enquired later on as to the degree of respect shown to such a lowly subordinate, the answer I got was - simple, that guy taught me almost everything I know!
So there is a message here somehow eh?
