Believe it or not some people like Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center. I've seen 3 year olds part with their favorite blanket easier than some adults give up an obsolete software version. If they don't want to pay for the Microsoft version in Win8 and don't want to use a non-Microsoft product, the VirtualBox solution works.

Sure. It works. But it's a rather extreme solution.

Anyway, as I say it's a moot point. Resellers will bundle the addin for Windows Media Centre anyway.

I'm hoping that VLC will still work on the final release of Windows 8.

Extreme only to those who run, have run and will only run Windows. Some of us who want a better (however one defines that) computer experience have moved to Linux or Mac but still have needs that can be met only by a Windows program. Many of us use VirtualBox and found setting it up was easy. There is the satisfaction of not contributing another cent to Microsoft.

Interesting. I moved away from Linux for a 'better' computer experience. But let's not turn this thread into another one of 'those' arguments.

However this thread is about Windows 8, and generally potential users of Windows 8 are those moving from Windows 7/Vista/XP. So, by your own admission,
Extreme only to those who run, have run and will only run Windows.
, it is indeed an extreme solution.

Anyway, if you are using your virtual box to run Windows, how are you not contributing another cent to Microsoft? You are using a licensed copy of Windows, right?

I also don't want to turn this into a piracy thread (I really don't care about piracy), but if you're getting satisfaction out of running a virtualized pirate copy of Windows, surely the adrenaline rush must be much higher by going the whole hog and installing a pirated OS as the primary OS on your system?

Wow, is your common sense really that poor or are you intentionally being pedantic? What something is and what it appears to be to those who know nothing about it are two different things. Are you going to claim you've never learned that?

Never said I was running a virtual copy of Win. Used to, an old and paid for copy of XP on my Linux laptop. Didn't cost me a cent. Windows software that needs Win7 or later prompted me to do a dual boot of a legal copy of Win and Linux. No VirtualBoxes for now, though I've found a photo editing tool that's tempting me to install Mac OS X in one.

I don't think I'm being pedantic. The original post was about Windows 8 not including DVD support. You suggested using a VM. I suggested it was an extreme solution, and you eventually agreed that it is extreme to the audience the original post was targeted at.

WINDOWS 8

Following the news of XP's retirement and the hassles involved, has anyone experienced Win 8 yet and if so the trials and tribulations?

richard: If you are going from WinXP to Win8, there'll be a lot of relearning. For folks that went from WinXP to Vista to Win7, Win8 is just another incremental step -- the biggest adustment is getting used to not having a Start button/menu.

I now have Win8 configured to boot directly to the Desktop, entirely bypassing the Metro interface, without using any third-party software. I have also accepted that the Metro screen is merely a different format of the old Start Menu, and use it for nothing else than searching to open a program. With those adjustments, I'm quite comfortable with Win8. THe only thing I miss from Win7 is the Aero interface -- I thought it was slick looking.

Windows 8

Post by Nereus »

I have found a thread about Windows 7, and one about the coming demise of XP, but I can not find a thread about Windows 8, or 8.1. (mods pls move if wrong place)

There is a scathing report in the latest edtion of Windows Secrets about Windows 8, and Microsoft development.

A lot of the material on the site is by subscription, but they have stated that this particular report is posted in the free section.

I am moving to LINUX instead of windows 8 which I think will end up like Vista did. I have Ubuntu up now as a dual boot on my Windows 7 PC. I runs much faster. I am playing with it to see if I should move everything from XP and windows 7 to Linux. I need to now before I get my next PC.

^ Let us know how it goes as I'm thinking of going the same way. After XP, imo the only good operating system Microsoft ever released, I'm disappointed with them going in a backwards direction. if I can get everything I like to work on a Unix based system that's definitely where I'm headed.

Pros and cons?

So far it is going well. It did take me most of a weekend to get things set up. I have a few programs that need to run under windows but I installed a virtual machine that allowed me to install a copy of XP pro on it. Now my WIN 7 machine can run XP using Ubuntu version of LINUX. Fortunately I had a XP pro Installation CD.
The only thing I haven't gotten working so far is using Windows network to connect my Virtual XP to my other XP machine.
I will be buying a new Laptop on my next trip to the U.S. Now I know I won't have to use windows 8 or even 7 for that matter.

You can actually try Ubuntu without doing anything to your PC. You burn it to a CD or USB stick and then boot from it. This allows you to try it out.

I have been working with Windows since around version 3.11 for workgropups.

I've had a few run-ins with Windows 8, and as long as I can avoid it, I won't have any more.

At work we will be using Win7 for the forseeable future, and anyone asking me about home use will get a free copy of Ubuntu or Gentoo or some other Linux flavor.

Windows 8 has no place on the desktop. It might be nice for touch-enabled devices, but I haven't had a platform to test (thank God) :-)
