When i eventually live in Hua Hin i will still come into town every week and i will be walking the beach early mornings that for me will be the whole point of retiring to Hua Hin or i could just live in our village stay home and get bored out of my brains moving to Thailand will for me be based on a good out door life style.

You can enjoy the bars around the Bintablock without being a sex tourist (pest) in my opinion.

A good laugh with a few expats and people watching that's my flavour.

I must admit I haven't been to the Bintablock in the evening for 3 or 4 years, I'd probably still enjoy a night out down there but it's not something that bothers me anymore.

Before we had the house in Takiab we used to be on it every night but I'm just as happy sat out having a few beers at home now or one of the local restaurants.

Kendo, Big Boy, Steve G, when you and your family have lived here continuously for a few years, get back to me and let me know how often you still visit that area... I suspect it will die off (your regular list) within a year of living here and you'll start looking at the outer parts of town to spend your time.
I was actually agreeing with you HH, the only few times I've been down Bintabaht in the last couple of years is because my partner sometimes plays pool and I've accompanied her to matches.

Ahem.... I am not sure how many of you motor-cyclists have tried actually walking around the centre of Hua Hin but believe me, it's not easy to stay on the pavements which are frequently blocked by an array of obstructions including motor-cycles, food carts and shopwares spilling out onto the street. So after 10 minutes of hopping on and off the pavements, (no mean feat in 6 inch heels) people probably give up and take the easier option of staying on the road. I don't think it's a conspiracy by tourists to upset the locals.

Having motorcycles driving in all directions, pavement that can't be walked on, people in the streets, etc, etc, etc, is exactly what makes Thailand the place it is, and I for one am very happy with things just the way they are. Sure it can be a bit frustrating at times, but I still love the sheer craziness of it all....lol.

As far as the Binta is concerned.................I've only been there two or three times during the last six years, and that only when I had friends over from the UK. Like BaaBaa, I also prefer sitting out at home with a cold beer or having a few down at one of the local shops. I have nothing against Binta but it's just too a bit much for me, and besides, I'd more than likely end up drooling if I sat around there too long.

I don't see any problem at all with resident expats plus wives still using the Binta - what's the big deal? And it shouldn't be an issue for pregnant women either. It's nothing like some other places - Soi Cowboy - back streets in Pattaya for example.
But as for Poolsuk and pedestrians. Back in the day there simply weren't so many bars down there. The open eateries allowed better access to that bit of pavement than the units do now, which combined with the row of parked bikes leaves very little space to walk along. Then you get to the corner behind City Beach and are forced out into the road again just to get round the corner. And quite simply there aren't pavements along the length of the road anyway. Those that are there have huge kerbs, and although I can still hop up and down them the knees do complain a bit, so they must be quite difficult for people who are a tad less mobile.
It's a narrow congested road which carries much more traffic - both pedestrian and motor variety - than it did a few years ago. Time for it to be pedestrianised IMO. It could still be opened to traffic day time. The only loser I can think of is the beer man who still goes round late at night to collect his money, and would have to resort to walking!
The biggest practical problem would be ample parking space just outside of the pedestrianised zone.

In reality of course it will never happen. After all people still try to negotiate the Night Market on bikes. The high kerbs along parts of Poolsuk are there to accomodate storm drains, so even with pedestrianistion either the pavements would have to remain, or some major new drainage system would probably be needed. TIT rules.

People here on holiday often don't know that they are last in the food chain of who has the right of way. Big trucks & buses are first, everything smaller is down the list, people on foot come in last. Couple that with all the looking around at all there is to see for the first time AND no sidewalks and it's a wonder there isn't a whole lot of knockdowns everyday.

My spring collection. That second one from last is really comfy though the wicker one above it is more practical for dodging motorbikes on Bintabaht! :D

I think the motorbike would come off worse if it hit those pink ones!
