Alleykat, the F & C done by the Brit expats here are not as good as the F & C in England because the fish type is generally not available here. :thumb:

The worst fish and chips I have ever eaten was in Australia, in Noosa to be precise. Battered Swordfish anyone? It just doesn't work, and in many places, if you want vinegar rather than poxy mayo, you'll be directed to the white spirit!

About the place which is about to open..............I checked in there two days ago, and it does look like they are nearly ready so let's just hope that they offer the real deal. :P

I know the Brits are going to hate me for this, but to be honest, I wasn't impressed with fish and chips in the UK. Maybe I just had bad luck, but after trying it once in London (Earls Court) and twice in Aberdeen, I never bothered again. It wasn't the fish that was the problem, but rather a peculiar aftertaste, perhaps from the oil.

Here in Thailand, I've only been fortunate enough to enjoy one GOOD fish and chips, and that was at an English owned restaurant down on the famous full moon party island (before the party).

I really hope this new place is the real deal.........thick flakey fish with real chips that are drowned in vinegar and covered in salt. :thumb:

Yes, now open. No shop sign apparent but has billboard on the street saying Fish & Chips and Hamburgers.

Anyhow, my wife and I ventured in there after work. First question I always ask.. what fish do you use? Response was local snapper. We both ordered battered fish and chips .. grilled was also on the menu. The fish arrived lightly battered and the chips appeared hand cut. Neither were oily. Overall tasty with good service. Spotless. Price was the norm.

Also on the menu were various hamburgers... Saw one takeaway beef (oz) hamburger and it looked very tempting.

As it is located almost opposite office, I think that their will be a few phone takeaway orders farang teachers.

Owner, Dave, is from New Zealand, and previously had the used book shop on the nearby corner.

Parking tonight was easily found on Petchkasim Road within half a block from the restaurant. Also, some parking in the lane next to the bookshop. However, outside the restaurant is a red zone.

Hi Pete,

You don't get that much red snapper here, it's mainly white snapper (seabass, barramundi), though on rare occasions the gf has come back from the market with what she called black snapper - and very tasty it was too. The white variety is the most expensive - probably because Thai people swear buy it and regard the other 2 varieties as far inferior.
Strange, when I lived in Florida years ago, everybody swore by red snapper.

The generic name for snapper in Thai is below, then just add the colour, i.e. white, red or black

Thanks Barry. That's almost exactly what I got from a conversation with the wife this morning. I'm going to assume then that any fish and chips served here where Cod is not used is pla kapong. Pete

Maybe. You should try this place when you get a chance Pagey.
You will see (taste) the difference (Kiwi style).
I had F&C there tonight and they were the best I've had in Thailand.
180 baht.

Ate at the new fish and chip shop last night and can only add to it's praises. The place is clean and freshly decorated and the fish was excellent. Spoke to the owner and he said there were still a few things to get sorted, no malt viniger or pickled onions, but would be in stock soon.
Hope he does well as it is in an excellent spot near the centre of town, and parking is easy.
Will deliver in the local area, but well worth a visit.

In a restaurant or a market, Pla Kapong might gt you a Snapper, but elsewhere you'll be handed a tin on sardines in tomato sauce.

On a slightly different note: Pete, it's best to assume all fish served up the form of Fish & Chips is that farmed fresh water rubbish unless the prices suggests otherwise. If you're getting Fish & Chips for 120 baht, it's not going to be snapper, and if it is, it's going to be a very small piece.

Is the place busy?

What do you get with the F&C? Peas, Bread and butter, ketchup, slice of lime?

Definitely needs the malt vinegar and/or tartare sauce
