Try using your grey matter and throw in a little practicing what you PREACH, quote SJ: 'Read the thread again slowly Sarge.'
Sarge, the posters' comment was made to people in general, not addressed to any individual. I could have read it a thousand times and not realised it must have been specific not general, or that you lived in such a place. If I was Lloyd Grossman on speed I'd probably still have struggled.. And from that nonsense you accuse me of... 'personal smear tactic, your snobbery shows in that you seem to think that people like me on lower incomes cannot possibly be living comfortably, what arrogance'
I never even mentioned your spending or lifestyle at all you confused me with another poster, plus I've never made a derogatory comment about anyone else's on this thread either. I did give a rather silly high list of costs right at the start of the thread which was a mistake, but I did say at the time it was a 'pick list' of things I knew of here, and that we nor anyone else need do all those things.

So what would you do if someone was accusing you of 'looking down on their lifestile and the way they live in a arrogant, snobby way'?... when you hadn't even mentioned it at all? Looking down your nose at others is just one of them things no-one likes to be accused of, and it's not something I do.

Sorry :D

As others have said, everyone is different, so the cost of living here is impossible to predict.

For me, the wife, three kids, and the grandparents...................around 40K does just fine. Of course if I was loaded, I probably would spend more, but not really much more since I enjoy a quiet simple life.

I've been to your (former) home and it was not a flat over a shop
No it was a town house over my former wifes business and as already admitted i do not own a car but have a bicycle and a motor sigh close enough i think added to the FACT it was the next post after mine and some long time between it and your previous post i feel pretty justified in saying BS
I'm still confused as to why you thought I was talking about you Sarge. Your townhouse looked like a normal townhouse to me with a normal living room containing a TV, sofa, computer station etc., with a normal kitchen containing all the required appliances behind that. I never went upstairs but I assume that was normal bedrooms.

If it was over a shop, the shop must have been in a basement that I wasn't aware of.

Plus, I not only mentioned people happy with a motorbike, I mentioned people happy with no personal transport at all.

I have two friends who actually do live in a shophouse over a bar or shop and I actually do know a few people who have no personal transport at all but use the green baht buses or tuk-tuks.

These were the people I was referring to and I also did not denigrate them for living that way. I just pointed out that some can live one way while others want a different lifestyle... neither is wrong in my opinion.

The point I have been trying to make throughout this entire discussion is that a person coming here to live should decide how they wish to live and plan accordingly as far as finances are concerned.

All I want is for people's lives once they move here to live up to their expectations and those are different for each one of us.

car for you renting every second day 6,000 a month (my Moto Sigh does for me)
3,000 a month eating out (we rarely eat out if we are bored or cannot be bothered to cook we call her MUM round seems the same as eating out to me)

that comes to 29.600

even with a few exra Baht for your own canardly (thats cockney slang for Rolls Royce it rolls down hills canardly get upem) say 20K a month it comes to 50K
which is still a fair few light years away from 120k/150k/200k and sounds very reasonable and totally normal to me

and i am sure of more use to the OP

My apologies to SJ, as there must be something addictive or hypnotic about this topic that prevents people from making a clean break from a meaningless and unwinnable argument.

This thread was never going to be of much practical help to anyone, given the huge chasm between incomes of people living here as well as the vast differences in what people consider necessary for a good quality of life.

It certainly isn't of much use to the OP, who asked the question, made 4 visits in a couple of days and hasn't been back since - and that was 4 months ago!

There have been some interesting posts and some interesting arguments, but we've gone round and round the houses (or shops or flats or condos) so many times I'm getting dizzy. It would take a day to find any helpful information in this thread. We're now reduced to "I can live cheaper than you", "I didn't say you couldn't", "Yes you did" "No... etc."

Congratulations Sarge, you win this month's prize for offending and being offended by the most people in the shortest time.
Please don't tell us how you did it!

Pharvey
If you read my post i was agreeing with you

If potatos are posted as being up to 1000 baht a kilo
The Op may say oh i can afford 500
When he gets here and finds the cheapest are 600 he is buggered

My point was and has been it is the minimum/average prices that are of more use
Had they posted---- from:- To:- I would have had NO argument

Anybody can spend more (even i could) it is the more which the OP can if he so wishes decide on

The cost of living index in the UK is based on average prices average income NOT MAXIMUMS

If 120k to 150K MINIMUM (not my word) was so set in concrete i would guess well over 75% of Farangs here would not be here

Lastly I only posted on this thread a tongue in cheek bit of humour @ my OWN EXPENSE
So to add to that humour let me ask if can support 10 casinos numerous meng dars over 14 years on 50,000 a month how many more casinos can i support on 120K

Maybe the Bangkok hospital should do humour transplants it should make a fortune

I heard that teachers normally have an income on around 40-45.000 bath a month, and they live a normal life without parties every weekend. I guess with 60-80.000 you can have a nice lifestyle down there. Guess it all comes down to how much you use on your free time and what activities you come up with.

That's a fair summary of the previous 17 pages :thumb:

At the latest rate of exchange of 32 Baht per US dollar, 120k Baht is over $3700 per mo. cost of living! That is a LOT more than I pay now in a big city. My idea was to retire there on a fixed pension and live well. Doesn't look like that can happen there.

One can only assume that you didn't read much of this thread - had you done so you would have heard from people who quite happily live in HH on 30-40,000 baht a month, whereas a few need to spend 120,000+ to enjoy their type of lifestyle. I am sure the majority spend somewhere in between and for a family of four, the average would be about 80,000 but with still plenty living on less. Of course whether you rent or buy a property has a big impact on your monthly outgoings, so factor that in and you can decide whether or not Thailand is for you!!

i cant see many people spending 120k unless they play golf everyday , and eat only imported food ,i struggle some days to spend 1000 baht , i think 50-60 k would see you live quite well

120 k is 4000 a day that would be a real high spending time here on golf /ladies and drink
