Astronomy, cosmology and space thread
Re: Astronomy, cosmology and space thread
Exciting to see what James Webb telescope shows us!

I agree, without these type of investments we’d still be living in the dark ages. If not from this investment alone, the boffins will learn much that can be introduced into everyday life.
Re: Astronomy, cosmology and space thread
Absolutely! What some people overlook is that ALL of that money has been spent on hundreds, if not thousands, of people right across the World. Hundreds of contractors suppling parts, frieght companys paid to deliver the parts, it is endless! And it is not just 1st World people. The latest launch was from Guiana, and I doubt that it was done for free!Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Mon Dec 27, 2021 7:52 am I agree, without these type of investments we’d still be living in the dark ages. Nice video for the nerds amongst us. Really interesting I thought. The engineering behind the James Webb Space Telescope. Nereus, you'll certainly enjoy this one.
Honestly, the launch of this telescope is the biggest thing of 2021. Being 100x more powerful than the Hubble, it's surely going to bring us some fascinating data.

Yep, looking forward to seeing what this one discovers. We had a lot from Kepler also, before which we didn't even know if other stars had exoplanets!

Re: Astronomy, cosmology and space thread
The telescope does have its own twitter page to follow for anyone interested. Easiest way to get updates on the goings on, I guess. It says in the bio that the first images are expected in June 22.

The people have voted for Hubble's best image of 2021. Galaxy NGC 5037. Sits at a distance of 150 million light-years away.
Just think what images the James Webb will show us!

Hubble was (and is) incredible - James Webb will be streets better technically and quality-wise. But just take a moment - The project/design for the "James Webb Telescope" began in 1996, so you could say the technology is already 25 years out of date. We can hardly imagine what this telescope will provide, let alone what we can produce in the future!!
