Once the service is up and running at 20 kn, the crossing time will be around 3 hours.
Just to compare, I went on the direct minibus from HH to Pattaya on Wednesday afternoon and it took 6 1/2 hours!!
3 hours is a decent time, don't know what happened with your so called direct bus though, you can nearly get to Korat in that time on the big buses.
Did your bus take loads of random detours when in small towns and pick people up? If it did, I've done the same trip but returning to HH, never again!
When a few of us had a long weekend in Pattaya we did it in well under 4 hours in a private mini bus but a boat journey would make it into a more pleasurable trip.

3 hours is a decent
Yeah I agree, particularly if it's HH pier to Bali Hai at the end of Wakning Street. Breakfast before departing, decent film and couple of beers on the boat and it'll be a painless trip going over. The way back will be hell on earth

There will be movies, snacks and drinks available on board.
Go-go dancing is a bit of a problem, though, they don't seem to have installed the poles yet!!
There's a bit of a reception party for the ferry at Ocean Marina in Pattaya tomorrow evening and, according to the owners, the service will start on November 19.
The initial plan is to run 3 times per week.
Once I know the schedule, hopefully by the end of this weekend, I'll post details.
So, the ferry will officially commence operating on Friday, 19 November.
For the initial period, it will leave Pattaya at 8.30 a.m. and arrive this side at around 11.30.
The boat will leave Mermaid Cruises Marina at 1.30 p.m. (complimentary transfer provided from central Hua Hin), arriving in Pattaya at around 4.30 p.m.
Initially, the ferry will run on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
The introductory rates are as follows (one-way):
Adults 1200 b, children (4-13 yrs) 750 b,
family ticket (2 adults, 2 kids) 3500 b
Following the introductory phase, it is planned to have the ferry permanently moored over here, so will then depart for Pattaya at 8.30 a.m., leaving Pattaya again at 1.30 p.m.
