Those UK international drivers permits are virtually impossible to get if you don't live there, you have to go to a major post office in person once a year to stay legal, you can't get them by post or apply over the internet or anything else that might be slightly convenient. Mine is about five years old, that's the last time I was in the UK when a post office was actually open!

Probably a stupid question, but I'll ask it anyway out of curiosity................. with it being an EEC licence, can't you get an IDP from any EEC country?

Yes you can.

I have a Spanish driving licence, and I obtained an IDP from the local traffic office.

With those I then obtained my Thai car and motorcycle licences.

No test except for reaction test on the first (1 year), subsequent renewal (5 year), no test at all.

Thank you. It sounded sensible, which is why I thought the answer would be no.

You can only get one from a country where you have a licence, I don't have a Luxembourg licence because I don't have a permanent address here, or a car come to that!

Anyone know if it is possible to renew a UK driving license while in Thailand, I don't wish to fly all the way back just to renew my license.

Technically, youu have to be a UK resident to hold a UK licence so you can renew it by post, or apply online, and get it sent to your UK address. If you don't have a UK address, they won't give you a licence. Residency for tax purposes doesn't matter, I still managed to get one using my Mothers address.

^^ having proven to the AA that I had a UK address and was paying by a UK debit card, I simply asked them to send it to my address in Thailand. No problem, it arrived in my SAE approx 10 days later.

Probably should have been but they would not issue the IDP..... I finally needed to resort to the AA (Automobile Association) as apposed to the RAC ( Recovering Alcoholics Club)

Quite rightly too  I would not miss the chance to, intentionally, misunderstand the AA as the group that would not accept me as a challenge. :D
