Pharvey seems to have gotten up to speed with it, and of course DTM. I don't know of any others on here, so just serves as a mention.

Pity England didn't have him in the ODI World Cup!!

Australian Club Cricketer Takes Six Wickets in Final Over to Win Match

"It is a cricketing miracle that could sit alongside Ian Botham 1981 or Ben Stokes 2019. But instead of Headingley, this latest incredible comeback took place in the humble surroundings of the Carrara Community Centre on Australia's Gold Coast.

Club side Surfers Paradise had victory in their grasp against Mudgeeraba in the Gold Coast's Premier League Division Three. Chasing 179, they needed just five runs from the final over with six wickets in hand to win.

Mudgeeraba captain Gareth Morgan had other ideas, taking six wickets in six balls to seal the unlikeliest of victories."

Not a big following of cricket fans on here, including me, but this is very interesting. It could just as well be posted in the engineering thread, because pure physics are involved:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-03-08/ ... /103418492

Inside the science of what makes a cricket ball swing.

How many times have you heard the ball swings when it’s humid, when there’s cloud cover, when it’s dusk, or when one side of the ball is heavier than the other?

Some of these statements may be true, and some are blatantly false, but the scientists who have studied swing bowling say the aerodynamics that explain it is relatively straightforward despite the myths and mystery.

It all comes down to the world of fluid dynamics, and while it certainly isn’t rocket science, it took a NASA scientist to explain the aerodynamics of swing and reverse-swing bowling.

A bit of trivia. When baseball was invented in the States in 1839, a lot of it was taken from Cricket as we know. All players were still catching the ball barehanded, which caused some huge problems and injuries, Especially by the catcher who was catching balls pitched at up to 70 mph in those early days. (Speeds reach 105 these days!) Along came the first gloves as pictured below moving the game even further away from Cricket. Perhaps Cricket players these days wear some sort of glove also, I don't know.

Interesting, Pete, thanks very much.

I don't know how many HHF members follow cricket these days, and since lindosfan went to that great cricket pavilion in the sky, I don't usuially bother posting. Certainly, it's a very different game these days from the cricket played 4o-odd years ago, with a number of short versions and a generally more aggressive and entertaining approach (certainly by England) in the 5-day Test matches.

There is a wide variety of types of bowler, from spinners, who generally bowl at 50-60 mph to the quickies who can reach just under 100 mph, moving the ball off the seam or swinging it in the air, depending on the weather and pitch conditions.

Batters wear gloves, as does the wicketkeeper, which doesn't stop some nasty injuries to the fingers. Fielders are not allowed to wear gloves at all (except in practice), and there are some nasty pics on line of finger injuries.

Anderson a target for USA's Major League Cricket

https://www.bbc.com/sport/cricket/articles/cm2nlynl95mo

England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker James Anderson is a surprise target for Major League Cricket.

BBC Sport understands senior figures with at least one MLC team have had their interest pricked by Anderson's comments last month about a return to white-ball cricket.

The unnamed franchise are now set to explore whether the 42-year-old would be interested in participating in the third edition of the T20 tournament in the United States next year.............

I'm not one for the sport these days, but do keep an eye on things if only to extract the urine from the devoted supporter that is DM... :neener: :butt:

But Crickey, what the hell is going on in Pakistan? A first innings score from Pakistan seemingly stuffing the touring side, only to see records falling left, right and center! Root - 262, Brooke - 317... A pitch for batters obviously, but then again Pakistan were 0-1 after the 1st ball of the second innings!

Fair play to them, even if they ignore the Welsh.... But then again, playing for the Lillywhites

Leave me alone you rotter! Nasty, stinky person.

Yes Indeed, the 1st test in Pakistan has been fascinating. Records being set left, right and centre. Pakistan scored c.560 in their 1st innings, then England, astonidhingly, scored over 800 runs at nearly a run a ball!

Then all of a sudden, Pakistan forgot how to bat, ending the day on 152 for 6, still 115 runs in arrears.
