Stopped into Bernie Bar yesterday. I was told that they were playing golf today but that it was a "proper Golf Society" (not quite sure what that means) and that there was not really an opportunity for me to play.

Anyway, thanks for the information, it was worth a try. :(

Maybe it was the way you asked the question... What Bernie meant was that they had a Golf Society tournament today (as they do every Tuesday, and Friday I believe). It is a regular member's event but they will let visitors (guests, non-members) play unless all t-times reserved for the event are fully booked.

I played with them several times, but never became a member of the society.

I'm guessing that you asked him if anyone was playing today that you could go out with and his answer was they were having a proper society event so that everyone he knows who play were probably already booked into that event. Did you then ask if you could join in the event?

Yes maybe the way asked but the reply 'proper golf society' seems an unfriendly remark with connotations of your not welcome. Could be wrong!

OK, thanks for the posts. Our conversation was very brief, and I only asked if I could play the following day, we didn't discuss anything in real detail. I should have asked more questions. The gentleman I spoke to did make some reference to a handicap rating but I do not have anything with me, last year when I played in a regular league, I was a 26. Not so good, huh? :)

Perhaps I will stop in there today and if he is around, I will find out more about when (or if) there might be an opportunity to play, I am here one more dy then back here in HH approx. Mar 30-April 3.

No I didn't end up playing. There is always tomorrow (Thursday) or I hope I can get out to play next time.

Wondering if anyone can help me out with some advice about clubs. I'm hacking round to about an 18 handicap at the moment, although I was single figures years ago. My trusty irons are now rusty and I just don't get the distance or feel out of them any more.
I've come across a second hand, full set of graphite shafted Taylor Made Burners (only irons). They seem to be in good nick with decent grips.
I'm really not up on clubs any more. Has anyone used these irons before and what did they think about them? Thanks.

Lomu,

As you know, I'm not a very good golfer but like you, I used to be a lot better than I am now. I bought professional quality irons from a place that had loaner sets of most of the top brands and after three months of switching them out every week or so I finally decided which ones felt better to me.

A lot of golf is confidence. If clubs feel good and comfortable to you, you will do better with them at whatever level you play.

If the person will let you, take those irons to the range a few times and see how they feel and whether they are comfortable to you and if they instill confidence or feel quirky or clunky (best words I can come up with, you'll know what I mean if you hit them a few times).

Club brand selection is a very personal thing and twenty people may give you twenty different answers about which brand is best, but what it comes down to is which brand is best for you, your swing, and your "mental feel".

Also, the shaft is important as in stiffness... it has to fit the speed of your swing. If you swing at a fast speed you need a stiffer shaft. If you swing slower you need a more flexible shaft. To determine that I actually had my swing speed measured by a golf professional. You may want to check with Mongkol Driving Range and see if they are capable of doing that and telling you what shaft stiffness would be best for your swing.

That's my two baht worth on the subject... and that's probably about all it's worth! :D

Sound advice, hhfarang. Thanks.
The shop where I've seen the clubs will let me take them for a day and I can play with them. I'll leave a 50% deposit (or whatever) and either buy them or not afterwards.
I agree with you about shafts. I've normally played with regulars, but I do tend to swing quickly so stiff shafts may be better. My father has a King Cobra stiff shafted driver in his spare set back home and I've rarely hit the ball longer and straighter than when using that club even if I've not been playing regularly.

Hi Lomu,

What model are they? Dont leave a deposit - what if you dont like em? You may be better suited to steel shafts - John At Mongkol has a nice set of Cleveland irons that you should try and a couple of other nice 2nd handers.
Like anything dont rush in - new sticks usually go great first time out!

Not sure what model, JW. I'll take more note next time I go into the shop. I must admit that I've always played with steel shafts except for the Taylor Made Bubble shafted driver that I have now and I've never felt very confident with that. It was a rash buy even though the pro I'd had a few lessons with and played with once suggested that I wait a few days to try it first on the rooftop practice net.
You're right, I won't rush into anything. The rusty old clubs are still doing half the trick and I've spoken to John at Mongkol before about the occasional set he sells through there. Maybe I'll have to wait a bit longer to save the money, but in the long run as long as my game improves it's all worth waiting for.

I've played with anything from $100 clubs to $1000 ones and even though the more expensive ones feel better and are a bit more consistent, I can't say that my scores changed drastically though it is more enjoyable to play with the nicer clubs.

I have this great memory of a time when I didn't really have money nor much interest for golf and I had fashioned a bag with duct tape and plastic tubes to keep it light and I had Northwestern clubs bought at Consumer's Distributing for $75. I showed up at this very nice course(Kananaskis in Western Canada) which has valet parking but back then had cheap afternoon rates. Everyone stared at the clubs and the people in the foursome I was were shaking their heads and thinking it was going to be a very long afternoon. I ended up with the best score on that day, nothing to write home about but it was somewhere around mid nineties which at the time was a good score for me.

Recently, I got my hands on one of those draw driver but it makes no difference to me. When I swing well, it's nice and long and if I miss, I still get the slice. I've actually gone back to my 10 year old driver because it feels better in my hand and I don't like the extra huge head on the new one and feel it's harder to control.

At the end of the day, it's all about the swing, I bet Tiger would break par with a shovel and a rake.

I've been watching the Black Mountain Open on ESPN today and I'm very surprised that I've seen only about 40 spectators all day. I've been to U.S. PGA tour events many times and you are lucky to ever get close enough to actually see a golfer as the crowds are ten to twenty people deep on every hole.

Anyone who went out today please let us know what it was like. Do they allow cameras?

The course is looking spectacular, but no cameras as at any tournament, and they will enforce.

I didnt make it today but i am told that there were decent crowds - (60 or 70 flowed the Parenvik group alone) obviously no where near the numbers for regular events - this is Hua Hin remember! Maybe a few more around at the weekend - it seems that Mr Edfors is gonna take some beating. Lets hope we get sub par from Jesper, he is a great entertainer on the course and would be sorely missed if he doesnt make the weekend.

Tiger would be a great incentive to make this tournament very popular in the future as he is half Thai and (arguably) the best golfer in the world. The Black Mountain Organizers would be smart to offer him a big incentive next year, although I don't know how you can entice someone who is already a multi-millionaire! What the heck do you offer him?
