At the airport, make sure your taxi is going straight to HH and not taking a detour for cheap petrol or picking up drivers mate in Bangkok etc. Every time I have had a taxi from BKK, this has happened. My last trip was the best, the driver "assured" me that his car wouldn't make it to HH in time unless he had his wheels balanced, which he did. Stopped for 20 mins and gave the bill TO ME! After 13 hour flight, I hadn't got the energy to argue, even though I speak good Thai, just get me there PLEASE. I should have taken Lomuamarts advice to me in HH recently "go for the jugular". Can confirm price is 2000.

From the MRT(underground) at humpalong train station i took a taxi wanting to go to the south bus station and The taxi driver said he'd take me to hua hin for 1600.
I said the bus station is fine.
Then he offered to take me for 1400 and it was done to my front door.

I wonder do a lot of taxis have to go back to bkk from Hua Hin with no fare.

Sounds a bit much, I went to Pattaya from BKK airport for 1200 in December.

Five minutes of haggling can do wonders

You will have no problem finding a taxi for your return trip.

Hua Hin is at breaking point with taxi,s, why do you think parking in town is so difficult now.

Mike.

Ps, you should be able to get a taxi from here to airport for under 2000bht.

Great minds think alike - I have decided to do the same thing this time for the first time ever. The cost for 4 days car hire isn't a lot more than the cab fare from and to BKK so seems like a good idea.

Just hope we don't get lost :? - maybe we can compare notes later.

Hi Martin

I arrive on Friday and leave on Monday so only a quick visit :(

But enough time to play a few rounds of golf (oh yeah and drink a few beers of course).

I'll check what I paid for the car and get back to you.

Cheers

silly boys: rent a car! get lost! Holy shit! there are few things in life thar are 100% but if i could bet on this at a million to 1 odds i could still get rich. I lived in hh for 2 years and went to bkk,oh say 20 times. So i kind of knew which way was up. Now mind you i never drove myself untill that dreadful day went my friend larry, who'd been to bkk maybe 40 times, and our girlfriends decieded to make the treck. I won't bore you with this entire twisted tale of woe but here's what it came down to[and some of the best free advise you''ll ever get]. After driving around in circles for 3h hours, me screaming deadly advise to anyone foolish enought to listen, i reallized that the 4 of us , 2 thai women at that, were never going to leave bkk. So i jumped out of the truck when i saw the first taxi and hired him to get us to hwy4 south. we followed him out of town till we hit 4 and i paid him ,hell i don't remember what but it included a big tip, for his services. If you try to get out on your own you are an idiot.

The morel Bill is, learn to read a map and have a good sense of direction, driven all over the place in TH no problems admitted BKK is a bit of a maze but with any place north is north south is south etc but no reason to get stressed all you needed to do was get on the express way and head for samut sakorrn dont let your bad experience make you put others of driving here they may enjoy getting lost

if you do get lost

GET on the express way head for, samut sakorrn / Rama 2 rd & the big Thai farmers bank and the big bridge over the river
