I cant see anything which Onlyme is saying is in anyway either scaremongering or trollish. My wife, who is a lawyer, and I have looked into land purchase, house building and can concur that what Onlyme is saying is technically correct. Farang cannot own land period. There are lots of ways you can try to circumnavigate these laws but when it comes down to a court of law you are going to loose. Yes I know lots of people who have gone down these roads and are still there and not worried. If they are happy to take the risks then good luck to them. It just seems that every time someone mentions the pitfalls people start jumping on the OP saying he should keep his opinions to himself, WHY, other posters warn of other things but dont get jumped on. This is supposed to be an open forum where people can post their opinions within certain guidelines or am I missing something here????
As someone who works here has a business but is not conected to development Im curious

I have only been a member of HHAD for a very short time. So have no idea of the factions/groups, etc.
Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing, wether you agree or disagree is great.

It gives readers more than 0ne option, perhaps even ideas we as readers may have never thought of. Allows the mind to exercise.

As Adults we makeup our own minds if we succeed or fail so be it.

Some people suggest you are mad to ride a motorcycle in Thailand too dangerious. There is lots of advice for people regarding life with Thai partners.
Do we listen, it apears not as this forum has many healthy
discussions for and against.

Imagine how boring life would be if we all agreed on the same football team, same car/motorcycle, colours, food, beer etc

Keep up the entertaining posts

Fully agree Skippy. If we cant have an opinion then things are bad. Just seems certain topics result in an over-reaction in my opinion.
I once posted that the reason we always loose at footbal is because we're crap. Im sure if walked around town with a placard saying the same thing Id have been lynched but thats my opinion. If we all liked the same things life would be sooooooo boring

skippy and H20Cunc,
Well said the pair of you. Essentially there is no problem reacting to a post you disagree with, but it should be in the form of explaining why your opinion differs, whether through personal experience or simply a different mindset, not personal attacks and insults, which are too often the case when it comes to the property threads. Equally, if someone sees a flaw in someones thinking or logic, it is perfectly acceptable to point it out. Opinions can change, but most often don't, and that is often the problem, as someone may have formed and stuck to their opinion for a long time, even though the factors that shaped their thoughts in the first place have changed, leading to others being incredulous that someone can still hold such an opinion. All of us are susceptible to this, particularly as we get older, and I think it can be quite a struggle sometimes to maintain an open mind, particularly on issues that one had 'decided' on before.

after all said & done, it is only the op's personal opinion & he is quite entitled to it. whether i agree or not is my choice, as it is everyone elses.
i read a lot of the posts here on hhad, all are personal opinions & experiences of people living or spending time in thailand.whether i agree or disagree with them is for me to decide.whether i reply to a post is also my choice but if i do, i only give my opinion based on my own experiences or beliefs.
i'm sure there are a lot of people out there that have benefited from the wisdom & information provided through hhad.
there is a need for healthy debate on certain issues but no need for personal attacks.
just for the record, the original post didnt really provide me with anything i didnt already know.
Remember, no one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

Exactly WL, and in my experience when people start responding to a difference of opinion with personal attacks and insults, it's generally because they either don't have a legitimate answer or they don't understand the subject.

I do not think that it has anything to do with "difference of opinion", or "understand the subject". For me it is to do with the continual insults offered by this poster.

500 baht under the counter would be ample to pass the test, anywhere in Thailand!
You guys need to get real.
Onlyme.

Bigboy. I've noticed that you are resident in the UK.
Please stay there!
Onlyme.

Why?
Because they're all crazy farrangs, trying to live out their dreams.
I can't believe the extremes a man will go to for a "pinch of pussy."
Onlyme.

Sergeant. Unless I've missed something? What the f*** are you ranting on about?

I've lived here for quite a few years, I'm happily versed in the Thai language, I like to think that I can "hold my own" with the Thais. I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them!
Some of you people on this branch are living in cloud cuckoo land.
Go and buy a Condo. It's legal, up to a point!
You've been warned on many occassions, go and do it.
Onlyme.

Takiap. How on this earth did you manage to buy a house in Thailand but, not have the wherewithal to get your visa sorted out first?
You guys really amaze me

Huahin is great if you liked Spanish beach resorts in the 80's.
I made the BIG mistake of going there last week for a few quiet drinks.
Couldn't get away from the hawkers. In one bar within 15 minutes I was accosted by18 rose sellers, 4 Mickey mouse watch salesman and numerous bargirls ( must be my looks .)
And it's not even peak season!

And many more in the same vein. A really sick one that was posted last week has been edited. His name says it all.

Nereus, you obviously do not like the OP but you again fail to refute anything in the original post that is wrong. You only mention some posts from other postings. Did you reply to those postings with your opinion at the time or just pick and choose bits of postings. As said this is an open forum within reason where we can post opinions. If you disagree post why not. Just dont say he said this he said that. Some posts recieve a reaction that is out of proportion and people just get jumped on. Tell me what is incorrect about the OP??? Are you saying I can own land???
To disagree is one thing this is another

What facts?

Nothing but gossip and unfounded old rumours, but, that's only my personal view of course.

OK Norseman you explain how I can legally own, keep, sell etc land and a house or explain to me exactly which facts are incorrect. As I've said My wife is a lawyer and we have spent a lot of money trying to find a way to do these things legally so I can say these things are not rumours. Over to you and please state which of the things are incorrect.

H2ODunc, please read that which I wrote,ie; "for me it is to do with the continual insults offered". It has nothing to do wether I like him or not, I do not know him, or to do with that which he supposedly wrote. If it is your opinion that he not very often insulting in his posts, then that is your right, just as it is mine to feel insulted.

And your wife is a lawyer?
I own my house legally and I really don't care if you don't own yours.
Why should I tell you something you don't believe or don't want to hear?

Nereus, I dont know the OP or have read many of his other posts. My point all along this is that certain subjects ellicit a reaction that is wrong for an open forum. You try to justify your post to me about onlyme but you still do not try to refute any of the posters arguements. You are quick to attack the poster but slow to attack the body of his posting.
Again I ask you what do you so think is wrong with the post that this is all linked to, not other posts or personal opinions of posters. Nobody has yet to post anything that has argued against a part of the posting.

Norseman ,so now you attack my wife, what you dont believe my wife is a lawyer. You say you own your own house yet refuse to say how?? To me that just confirms all I've being saying. Certain topics end up with a slagging match without any reasonable arguement. If you are a farang then YOU cannot own your house, your Thai wife or company may own it but you cannot. Untill I can LEGALLY own land and property here then I wont. As said I await someone who is so against people being warned telling me just how I can do that. I wont hold my breath then
