JW.
It's difficult music to describe, but basically he was a folkie. Great friends with John Martyn (who wrote "Solid air" for him). If you get a chance to listen to the album Bryter Later (ND), I'm sure you'll appreciate it in quieter moments.
And Randy, I was introduced to Nick Drake 30 years ago and the feeling hasn't left yet.
So, on comes "Over the hill" by John Martyn.
And I've still got the original of Bryter Later in a cupboard under the stairs back in London.

Yup, a great loss etc etc, Randy.
But he was a bit good on the old guitar, wasn't he?
It wasn't all manic though. Lots of his earlier music was full of life. (And in appreciation of this thread, I've put "I've been smoking too long" on).

Excellent guitarist, very hard to emulate as he often made up his own tunings and he had very long fingers so could span great areas of the fret board. Im searching my ipod for 'Five leaves left' as we speak...Ah here it is, Hmmmm.

I think that's it. The acoustic version, please. I'll try to listen.
To change the tune, as they say. Do you have any Clash? Something off Sandinista? "The Sound of the Sinners"? Souff London rules.
That's depressing isn't it, as I've got to face it in a few days?
Anyway, if you don't put the music on, I'll play Leonard Cohen.

Getting back to buksida's original question
So when you're feelin sad and blue, what do you put on to bring you back up ... or send you back down ...
here is a few of mine.
Up
Muddy Waters - Mannish Boy (the version with Johnny Winters)
AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie
Alabama 3 - Ain't Goin' To Goa
The Jam - When You're Young
B-52's - Rock Lobster
Blur - Parklife
Black Uhuru - What Is Life?
Johnny Nash - I Can See Clearly Now
Rage Against the Machine - Bullet In The Head (maybe I should put this one in a category of it's own - it's more of a 'venting pure aggression when you are p**sed off' song! You do feel a whole lot better after though...)

Down
Joy Division - Atmosphere, Dead Souls (actually pretty much any JD song!)
David Bowie - Wild Is The Wind
Cold Chisel - Flame Trees
Doors - The End (obvious really!)
Louis Armstrong - What A Wonderful World (should make you feel good, but always makes me sad...)

Joy Division - love will tear us apart.
Ian Curtis had nothing on that "folkie" Nick Drake.
The sun's come out, so I'll put some Happy Mondays on now.
Na, John Martyn. You've all got thinking that way.
