Updating Esan Baan Suan, I've started eating there regularly again now, and the menu is large (typed in English and Thai) with the cooking top class and prices excellent. I always eat Thai there, but had the 350 Baht tenderloin steak yesterday (Thai cut) and it was actually quite good with my extra portion of fries (definitely sharable!). Very popular with the Bangkok set so maybe too busy during regular meal times at weekends and holidays, although you should get a salah somewhere, but maybe not a fan!

There is a live music stage (not operating during the afternoon when we go) and huge parking behind and they have three separate kitchens which I think are variously for Thai, farang and Esan food. The kitchen at the front had huge steaming plates of catfish coming out yesterday, that's the Esan one then! Parking access is from the soi after the restaurant, or via a small track just before it, easy to miss. There's a very naughty sweet desserts stand near the back, be careful!

The only possible complaint I could make is that as it's school holidays they had a couple of temporary waitresses walking around like zombies! The rest are always very good and cheerful too. :D

I've just had a look, and its a good looking menu, with reasonable prices. Mrs BB is always looking for a new Isaan Restaurant, and I think we'll give it a try - thank you.

Updating Esan Baan Suan…..
That’s the Issan restaurant we always use, it’s local for us, I’ve always had a good meal there but as you say, avoid weekends.

We've just tried it. Lovely food at excellent prices. We'll definitely go again.

Only one criticism - the entrance. Obviously a design feature, but I'd imagine having to go up or down a grassy slope in the wet could get a tad slippery. A set of steps or a ramp wouldn't go amiss.

^ I’ve never tried it but there is parking behind as well, I don’t know if the access from there is any better.
It’s down a small lane nearby but we always go on a weekday lunchtime so have never needed to use it.

We enjoyed it so much we went back again tonight, and I had a proper look around. Massive, isn't it? At the far end, I fiund the other entrance and car park, so will park properly in future.

Most people don't enter from the front of the restaurant. The better entrance is at the rear, via either a very small alley just before the restaurant or a proper soi a few metres after it. There is huge parking behind.

I believe the isaan restaurant that BB is referring to is on land owned by the restaurant. I met one of the family once and that was my understanding.

In soi102 there are a heap of restaurants now, and those I use are all excellent value. The latest is 'The Mango Trees', which replaced Roi Song much further away from the hordes and west of the junction that takes you in one direction, to Eurodeli, and in the other, the excellent Gary @ Sabai Sabai. Unbelievebly low prices and and excellent Thai food. We were told that their current prices would stay as they are for 3-months, and will then be reveiwed.

Again, they are cheaper because they are away from the main tourist traps.

I will say, we were going to try Je Pheung on Soi 102 last Thursday, only to find it does not open on a Thursday. No worries says I, I've been hearing a lot of good things about Soi102, and its ever-growing restaurant scene. I'll drive, and when we something we fancy, we'll stop. We drove until we got to Sabai Sabai where we know we won't be disappointed. However, driving around, we didn't see anything that jumped out and said 'come inside'. Maybe you could drop a few more names that we can search for. I avoid Eurodeli since being refused entry whilst wearing shoes.

A bigger issue is parking! It's getting harder and harder. My regulars are what was called 'The Little Duck Corner' but seems to have sligghly amended it's name, I haven't been there for a while as parking is harder, plus time spent in Bkk, plus family visiting, great prices and a few personal Thai favourites. It does some western food as well, but I have never tried it. it's the 3rd shop past the big council works if heading away from the railway line. The Mango Trees as stated above quickly became a regular, no problem parking and great Thai food and Sabai Sabai - Thursday roast and Monday bubble & squeak!

Thanks for the heads up, been away for a week so tonight was the first time to try.

Fussy eater Thai friend loved it and alread planning to take her work colleagues as close to their place of work.

She had a pork dish on rice with a fried egg which looked to be cooked in a nice dark rich sauce, somtam, an iced coconut drink, I had a big plate of sweet and sour chicken with a portion of rice and a big Leo and total was 350 Baht.

Many stir fried dishes, red curry. massam , penang etc were only 80 Baht so even if they increase to 100 Baht in the future it will still be reasonable and on par with other similar restaurants.

Another good restaurant in the area, very popular with Thais, is down the Soi with El Toro Loco near the corner, a few hundred metres down on the right side, plenty of parking on the empty land direcctly opposite. When I first went there 5+ years ago the menu was only in Thai but now they have printed a seperate menu in English.

Interesting, thank you. I've often seen cars pulling onto that piece of land, and wondered why.

Mods

Can we split the thread into two: (1) rising prices and (2) Isaan restaurants? They don't belong together and I'm only interesting in reading the latter. :)
