MOTOR CYCLE HELMETS
Helmets
You will find lots of people riding around HH with no helmet, Thais and farang. If everyone was made to look at the pictures Dr Dave posted I think more people would start. A good helmet costs less than an afternoon down the Bintabaht. When I came back to stay I brought a UK helmet and Proper armoured bike jacket and trousers. When going anywhere further than local I put em on. It may be hot and sticky but If it did come to me having a run in with the tarmac then I was going to be protected. The amount of people , young girls in bikinis especially, Ive picked up off the road on Koh Tao is horriffic. You dont love anybody more than yourself so look after yourself. Dont know the link to Dr Daves pics but I'm sure a search would bring em up. YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE !!!!!!!!!

Wouldn't it be a good idea for mo'cyc' taxi drivers to carry an extra helmet for passengers (always assuming that they can afford a half decent one -maybe, supplemented by the govt??
) If you have your own bike you leave the helmet with the bike, but you can hardly carry a helmet around with you all day on the off chance that you might use a motorbike taxi. Having said that, the number that I've smelt drink on recently makes me think it's probably not a good idea using them at all!

I noticed when I was in BKK that all the taxi bikes carried one I think it may now be law there, Though I am only guessing, but yes a good idea . Though you would find no doubt that if they made it law the taxi bikes would carry the cheapest helmet on the market so defeating the object all together. thats LOS for you

I think it's been the law for some time now that pillion riders have to wear helmets - and that's all over Thailand. It's just not enforced in most places.
I can remember years ago BKK clamping down on this - as most other areas, HH included - still tolerated no helmet for the rider. Then, the cops starting hitting the rider for no helmet. Maybe it's just a matter of time before everyone needs one in HH, although I'm sure it has something to do with money, as mentioned above. How would all the kids get to school if the regulations were strictly enforced re helmets and overloading?

I would recommend to buy one from your homecountry if you ever think of riding a bike in Thailand or wherever. Composite fibre helmets will be good from good makes like HJC, Shoei etc.

I think the main reason why Thai people don't wear helmets is the same as the reason they all drive like complete twats!
LUCK
If an UNLUCKY person has an accident whilst wearing a helmet then he will still be seriously injured.
On the contrary, a LUCKY person will not have an accident even if wearing a helmet.
For this reason helmets become irrelevent, adn luch becomes the determining factor.
This is true in so many situations its is unbelevieable - I recently had my driving license removed from me for an offical period of 15 days (I live in Bangkok and last year the police had a 1 week period of integrity and stopped all driving that were speeding on the Chonburi motorway, even Mercedes drivers!). When I enquired at the Police station if I was offically baneed, or was permitted to drive, the best answer I could get ws 'Depends on your Luck' meaing is I was KUCKY enough not to be stopped by anotehr policeman in 15 days the it was OK for me to drive. If I was UNLUCKY and was stopped, then I would be in trouble for not having a Driving License.

I buy those Index full face ones, they're stronger than the average Honda icecream containers that you get with new bikes. You can buy them at the Pae Mai Tuesday market for around 7-800 baht.Sultry wrote:How much does it cost to buy a good motorboke helmet? I might buy one just to survive motorbike taxi trips.
Trouble is people keep pinching them so don't leave it with the bike ... I'm on my fourth one now. It baffles my why a Thai would go to the trouble of stealing a helmet then never wearing the damn thing. Probably the same mentallity as we had when we were teenagers after a night on the sauce ... lets nick a traffic cone!

I would advise anyone, Thai included, not to rely on luck. A friend of mine once got hit by a car while driving his motorcycle. His head came out all right, thanks to his helmet which ended up completely crushed.Winkie wrote: If an UNLUCKY person has an accident whilst wearing a helmet then he will still be seriously injured.

My own experience is that the driving is a bit nuts in Hua Hin and a helmet is essential. As is sobriety (take note some of the idiots out there driving pissed, no doubt that's how most ferangs die). I'd advise anyone who values their brain to buy a quality helmet to protect it. If it gets nicked so what, you buy another one, but you can't buy a new brain.
