Hua Hin Kite Festival, March 23-25 2018
Re: Hua Hin Kite Festival, March 23-25 2018
Did anybody go today? Did it improve with flying kites as the afternoon went on? IMHO it'll take a lot to beat Cha-Am beach as a venue. At least you can relax in a deck chair whilst waiting for the kites to get airborne. I went past about 10:30 and 14:30 today.
If you went, please share photos.

Well folks got news for you,its not at cha am or the beach, ok!! Its at the Army camp in a very nice grassed setting. So give the avent a go, stop your your belly aching and negativity and except where the organizers have placed it. I went today and saw for the first time a Kite festival and I was impressed, but then again I could be easily impressed.Food was very cheap and appeared that some of the stalls were run by the Army. I paid 40b for two hot dogs on a boxed Banana leaf package. Water was 10b. Maybe there wasn't the approx 100 Kites said to be attending but I enjoyed the day. Its free to get in so why drive past twice without dropping in and then write up negative vibes.
Re: Hua Hin Kite Festival, March 23-25 2018
That's a bit harsh, BB is clearly a regular attendee and said in his last but one post they plan to attend on Sunday.
For a review of a kite festival you have written well about the food on offer!!!
Talk is cheap

I guess that is aimed at meartyoz wrote: ↑Fri Mar 23, 2018 9:13 pm Well folks got news for you,its not at cha am or the beach, ok!! Its at the Army camp in a very nice grassed setting. 1. Who said it was at Cha-Am Beach?
2. I'm very pleased to hear food and drinks are reasonably priced after the last event I attended there. However, what else is there to do for 6 to 8 hours other than wait for kites to be launched? At least at Cha-Am it was a great day at the beach as well, especially once the tide was right out. As this is your first festival, I guess you aren't missing what you never had.
3. I didn't drop in because I was busy on a mission of mercy, and didn't have time. As I said in my post, we will be going as a family on Sunday. However, I don't suppose it will be an all day event as it has been at Cha-Am. I was hoping for some useful information regarding times when most kites will be flying.
So, artyoz, can you help? What is the best time to visit please? Are there sideshows to keep people amused for hours on end. When I used to attend the Bristol kite festival, there were all sorts of festivities such as motorcycle stunt riding, live music and parachutists to name just a few.

I see that TAT have now published some useful information. Unfortunately, we don't know if the following timetable applies to a particular day, or each day. So, we now know you can but 2 hot dogs for 40 Baht, and a timetable of events:
[Edit] Looking at that timetable, the best time to be there (if Cha-Am programme can be applied) is between 16:00 and 17:00.
Looking at photographs, outside of looking at kites, there are kite workshops for kids, but little else to keep people amused, so I would suggest allowing time to watch the stunt kites - they can be spectacular, especially if you haven't seen them before. Outside of that, just make sure you are there for at least one of the public times - that is when the best photo opportunities come.

Yes BB I have never seen this type of event before so I dont know what I was missing and I thought it it worth 2-3 hrs to watch the preceedings. Possibly Friday is not the best day to go.
1. You kept on about how good the event was at Cha am & it was on the beach. Over & over!! 3 times..plus Bristol!! Crikey things do change and you also live in Thai.
2. I agree hard to fill in 6-8 hrs there but its free so you can leave when you like and not cost you anything.
3. Sorry to hear you were on a mission of mercy..I am very aware of the good stuff you do for others here in HH. As far as times of kites I'm sorry I didnt take any notice of time as I just enjoyed the 4 hrs I was there.
So I hope your visitors enjoy the show as much as I did. Maybe I'll go back tomorrow to see it again.

We dropped in yesterday a bit after 12. We found a nice place to sit under the pavilion and watched the show for 3 hours.
Being in the shade and with a good wind it was quite enjoyable experience.
The only down side was the rude farangs that would walk up and stand right in front of you to watch the show. But a tapped on the back and telling them to move usually took care of that issue. Whereas the Thai's were very careful not to block anyone's view.
The synchronized flyers were quite fun to watch. I especially enjoyed the show the guy in the wheel chair put in.
I felt blessed to help a mother and daughter get their kit to fly by teaching the them about wind direction.
All in all, an enjoyable afternoon.

HaHa - this just goes to show that you can't believe the various accounts (not that I'm doubting yours ). Most of the reports I read about yesterday said there wasn't enough wind to get the big kites off the ground.
I guess I am going today with preconceived expectations. Cha-Am was such a perfect location. Cha-Am was a great family day at the beach, although parking etc was always a challenge. I will review later this evening (hopefully with photos) if I can, and I will base it on my family's experience rather than my preconceived disappointment :twisted

Re: Hua Hin Kite Festival, March 23-25 2018
A lot of tge larger kites had problems because of low wind speed. But managed to get up in the air.
Its the smaller kites that perform to music that made the show for me.

Yes they can be fun to watch. Even better at Cha-Am when the operators have to wade out upto their chests in the surf to control their kites.
