Satelite Broadband Internet
This from CAT's "2,048Kbps" connection, midday:
284.6 kilobits per second
Communications 284.6 kilobits per second
Storage 34.7 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 29.5 seconds
Subjective rating Mediocre
Not very good at all, this one has gradually deteriorated in performance over the last month. I think its going the same way as Maxnet.

I also have satellite Internet from CSLoxinfo
Yes the installation was profession, But the performance both bandwidth and reliability is pretty disgraceful. However out where I live it is the only option. WhenI lived near town the ADSL performance was similarly disgraceful.
I have actually been a little imaginative and am sharing the service with my neighbours, IPstar unit at base of watertower power and data up to wireless router at 15 Meters or so above ground decent reception across the estate.

I am thourghly confused on this speed business. My computer was / is slowing down and i thought i would need to call on a boffin such as bushida to look at the machine and give it a clear out. However i checked the speed and it said 118kbps so i am not getting the 250kbps i am paying for and which was on previous testing was 205kbps . So is it the provider or is it the machine?
I have just tested again before visiting TT&T and found that on TT&T's test i get 212.8 kbps , and on the link bushida gave 412.6kbps, 402.5kbps , 401kbs, yes i ran the test three times as i could not believe the results ,all of which are rubbish as the download from the net speed is pathetic. What's happening here ???

There are two ways you can look at speed:
1) The speed of operation of the computer, ie. opening programs, switching tasks, gaming performance and startup.
2) The speed of the internet connection: opening websites, downloading email, transfering files etc.
You can have the fastest computer in the world but it wont help if your connection is crap.
You will never get the maximum connection speed, 256Kbps in your case, there are so many factors that slow it down such as bad telephone cables, power supply, Windows security configuration, 4 million other people using it, other programs connecting that you don't know about, server performance at the other end ...
If you're getting half (128) I would be happy, especially from TT&T as they are seriously over subscribed.
You will also notice that time of day makes a big difference, for me its useless in the mornings but its lightening after midnight.

Ok Buksida i understand what you say, but i am paying around 1600 baht for 256 speed getting 118 should i be getting a discount. Yeah i know it's Thailand so no chance but maybe if a few people got together and complained through the Bangkok Post at this rip off maybe things would improve.
Is the easy way out to take ipstar or will go the same way.??

mj, I was as annoyed as you when it went that bad, I take it you're using Maxnet? Providing the service you advertise often seems to be lost on Thai companies, coupled with the fact that Thais rarely complain, why should they care.
iPStar will be better yes, simply because it isnt as popular. A general rule would be; the more you pay, the closer you get to the advertised speed.

Thanks Buksida i know what you say is correct just pissed off with tt&t. I had six days without the line. Every day they said " connect tomorrow sure" on the sixth day , I'm getting religious here " they reconnected me.
However one day later i had no phone but still had the computer connection. I only knew this as my friend tried to phone and got the engaged tone and phoned me on the other line. I didn't complain as i was sure if i did i would lose my internet connection. Behold 8 days later the phone was back on don't know what happened.
Yes i'm a sad person i should have gone down and complained but really there is no point afterall they are doing us a favour providing the "service" and we have money and must/should pay, what's service afterall.

First of all I must say I don't think you are a sad person.machersjohn wrote: Yes i'm a sad person i should have gone down and complained but really there is no point afterall they are doing us a favour providing the "service" and we have money and must/should pay, what's service afterall.
Just realistic and somehow wise.
I complained to tt&t for a dead telephone line.
Got the line back - but internet was dead!
Complained-
Got internet back - telephone dead.
Next time my wife made the call - words of abuse - voila, everything works perfect.
This problem must be taken care of by a thai native.
English didn't work with tt&t.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.
Thai rarely works with them either, I resorted to calling the manager's personal number and dispatching abuse ... technicians were round within ten minutes.
Had similar probs with phone line going down, then internet being cut off, then they reckon it takes four days to turn it on again ... F#$%ing idiots.

Esbee, not sure about Thailand, but when I moved over to Perth West Australia and before I went with Broadband, I asked the same question to Foxtell (our cable TV provider) and was told that it could not be done because the Telstra (phone/internet providers) dish points the opposite way to the Foxtel one, so it was not possible. Perhaps you may have the same problem.

Broad band access
I've made a modest propasl here to try to get some improvments from the ISPs
