Hua Hin "chopping mawww"
Sorry, you're wrong, oh so wrong.
World Cup winners we are.
A certain World Cup took place in Hua Hin a few short months ago and Scotland beat all comers to win the World Cup.
I'll accept an 'oops you're right apology' and not insist on a grovelling one.
A World Cup is a World Cup in my eyes.
Don't forget to stay on topic or we might get a row.
So here goes. Does anyone know what happened to the paper shop in Hua Hin.

Not just on this forum Limey. There seems to be a culture of cynicism developing amongst those who have resided in Thailand for any length of time, as if by running the place down they can demonstrate some sort of knowledgeable superiority over those who still have an enthusiastic attitude to life in Thailand.
All I can say is if they think life is rough there then come back to the UK for six months.
I hope to meet you in HH in Christmas 2007 Limey and we can drink to our mutual good fortune.

enthusiastic attitude about the paradise one is about to enter seems to denote lack of experience.
Absolutely everyone living in the real world of (mark here the dreamland of your choice) seems to change. So sad!

This seems to be inevitable. Even to the extent that lack of worldly cynicism and, particularly,Dougal wrote:Not just on this forum Limey. You are right that you develop some sort of cynicism living here.Dougal wrote: There seems to be a culture of cynicism developing amongst those who have resided in Thailand for any length of time, as if by running the place down they can demonstrate some sort of knowledgeable superiority over those who still have an enthusiastic attitude to life in Thailand.

I had the same sort of cynicism when I lived in Japan, Singapore and the US of A.
Not sure about this, but I think you have to make a biggish change in your residential environment to understand it, but it's there all right.
If you have the impression that we're in lack of holding an enthusiastic attitude to life in Thailand, you are wrong.
We love Thailand - that's why we live here!!
Back to Europe?
No thank you.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.
Welcome to paradise
It is just SO interesting to see people who dont live here, who have never lived here call those of us who DO live here cynical.
I started off this forum. Because I hate this store does not mean that I hate Thailand and should move back to where I came from. It IS possible to love this country, live here quite willingly and happily AND criticize that which we find distasteful, uncomfortable or unsettling. I have to agree with Norseman. ( Note: I will no longer even go into this store. I drove up to Big C yesterday for all my Xmas shopping.)
Dougal and Limey must be coming from a place so rotten that ANYPLACE will be heaven ( though the times I have been to England. .and there have been several for extended periods. . .it didnt seem half bad! OK so the sun never shines, but you have English beer! Fair trade I'd say.)
The ONLY reason we appear cynical is that we want to discourage you newbies from coming to Paradise and spoiling it.
In reality, the shops here are all splendid, the people friendly and honest to a fault. They are careful courteous drivers and the police are beyond reproach. Everything is dirt cheap or free, there are no jellyfish in our crystal clear ocean and the beach is pristine and deserted ( except for the "babes") for miles. Our schools and universities offer a sound education to rival that of English public schools and Harvard.
The town is beautiful beyond measure with all the new, carefully designed and environmentally sensitive construcion which takes place ONLY when you are not around to hear it. We have no dog problem. It only rains at night when you are sleeping, the full moon is set to rise every night and birds awaken you every morning. The land is just flowing with milk and honey!
The streets are actually paved with gold, you know, the money grows on trees and your troubles melt like lemondrops and the clouds are far behind you. The bar girls are so generous and friendly that you wont have to pay a thing to sleep with them. . .and they will usually buy you all the beer you want.
Of course, you will discover all this for yourself when you get here and settle down. Welcome to Paradise.

With respect Chas, you don't know where I've lived. My comments were in reply to Limey's general remarks about whinging, which Brits seem to have turned into a fine art.
As to Index store I am sure I would agree with you about its specific shortcomings.
I do not expect Hua Hin or anywhere else to be an earthly paradise, but as a comparatively wealthy (comparative to the average Thai that is) I can enjoy a far higher standard of living there than in the UK.
It seems to be part of the human condition to forget over time the shortcomings of the place one has come from and remember only the good parts and that comes over very clearly in this and other forums populated by ex-pats. You only have to look at the number of cases where people have emigrated to Australia, stayed for a year or so and returned to the UK complaining about what they missed, only to rapidly rediscover the reasons they emigrated in the first place.
I won't bother to refer to your later comments, descending to the level of sarcasm is merely childish.
