Are you sure this is correct? I remember there was a culture a few years back of people in the UK just turning up at an airport and getting super cheap tickets from last minute cancellations. It became such a problem that the airlines in the UK, and as far as I'm aware across the EU too, now charge about 3 times a standard fare for last minute bookings, regardless of seating capacity on the flight.
I don't know it the situation is the same here or not?
As with so many things but definitely with flights, it always pays to check costs with as many of the major airlines as possible as they often have special offers. Yesterday I received an email from BA offering 25% of the price of a ticket but the dates were restricted and didn't suit me, but may have been fine for somebody else. The same with Gulf Air, yesterday they were offering a one day only sale quoting 50% off economy tickets, but again the travel dates ended 31/3/13 and of no use to me. I'm not sure that they were genuine savings and literally half or 3/4 of their normal fares, but almost certainly they would have been cheaper than normal.
I just got a great deal with austrian airways . £ 570 from heathrow only a short stop in vienna and returning 9 months later . Booked through OPODO :-)

I'm sure you are correct, although the OP was looking for a flight Fromm BKK to the UK rather than UK to BKK. As has been mentioned by others, flights from BKK to the UK are always more expensive than from the UK to BKK.
Does anyone actually know why return flights from Asia back to Europe are almost double the price? Its the same plane, same seat, same fuel, highly annoying and somewhat prohibitive!

Not a logic that you or I would understand. I used to work in Pakistan and an Emirates flight from Karachi to London via Dubai was always a lot cheaper than just Dubai to London and I think it was the same flying from London to Karachi. Maybe somebody with an inside knowledge of the ABTA rules/ regs would be able to explain?
Applying my own personal logic, which may be way off track...........
Airlines divide each flight up into sections. Seats that they know they can sell, seats that they might sell and seats that wouldn't normally sell. These are then put on the market as expensive, medium and cheap(ish).
The cheap flights are fed directly into the European holiday market, because Thailand is still an attractive destination, and will probably sell - as they wouldn't normally sell, any sold are a bonus to the airline. That leaves only the medium and expensive categories available for any flight originating outside of Europe.

Turkish airlines were somehow voted best airline in Europe, god knows how. I used to fly with them regularly and they are terrible, service in Istanbul was amongst the worst I have known.
I have normally got the best deals with Expedia.com
