Relieved I won't have to do the practical test - the last time was in the days when you had to have a bloke walking in front of your Ford-T waving a flag. (Slight exaggeration, but it has been rather a long time.)
However, one more question and apologies for ignorance, but where's the HH Immigration office, and can/will they issue a residence letter while you wait? I'm thinking I could apply for it the day before I plan to head off to the Dept of Motor Vehicles, keeping my giblets crossed that the Immo staff will be in a cooperative mood...

The Immigration Office is at the northern end of the Klong Road at the 3 Girls Restaurant.
If you have the required documentation, i.e. proof of ownership or rental contract etc., they will issue the confirmation on the spot - take 2 photos with you or have them done there.
