What was your most memorable meal? Where was it?
Re: What was your most memorable meal? Where was it?
Sorry for the long pre amble
During a short tour with the RAF in the Falkland Islands, I was given a letter by the CAA allowing me to carry out Non-destructive testing on any aircraft in the southern hemisphere, (wish I still had it).
This allowed me to legally sign for work on Bristow’s Helicopters who at the time were supporting the RAF and running fisheries protection. This work was free gratis to the company and I gained a good working relationship with the Chief Engineer.
Towards the end of the tour and for 3 months, only eating what had come in on the supply boat, (freezer dried meat and no potatoes for 3 weeks), I was invited to a formal “dining in night” by Bristow’s.
The company had recently been taken over by a large hotel chain and the CEO was visiting. I was seated on the right hand of the Chief Pilot, CEO on the left, the only other RAF presence was the Ops officer who tasked them, seated further down the table.
Many G & Ts to start, the best local steak (normally illegal as not tested) as the main course, can't remember the rest of the menu but the steak was super. Lots of wine during the meal and Port to finish, then came the speeches.
CEO explained the company take over and then the Chief Pilot called on me "The Archangel Charly" to make a speech, I nearly fell through the floor, not expecting this.
Luckily I had something they could all relate to, as they had assisted me a few weeks earlier in flying me to Port Stanley hospital when 18 inches of snow blocked the roads overnight. It doesn’t sound much but 35 Km of gravel roads with mine fields on both side is too risky.
I had 3 days R & R and was determined to make my appointment!
My ad lib speech went fairly well, describing the run up and required permissions for my minor Op, combined with thanks to Bristow Helicopters for assisting me.
To this day I wonder how, after this great dinner, an audience of all men (and one woman pilot) felt about my speech on the story of my vasectomy.

Re: What was your most memorable meal? Where was it?
My most memorable meal was an odd one. Igot invited by a mate to go fishing out of littlehampton on his boat. On the way down we poached a few pheasants and shot a few rabbits.
Before boarding we bought some cripy bread rolls freshly baked. After casting off it took about 30 mins to get to the fishing area we wanted. The agreement was the first fish we caught we ate. I caught a huss (dogfish) My mate nailed to this board he had set up skinned it |(the skin is very tough like shark skin) He the chopped the fish into steaks fried it in butter and put it in a fresh bread roll, the taste was sensational not out of the seea 10 minutes and I was eating it.
To this day I will only eat fresh fish, never frozen.
