Just hearing another quake has hit Tokyo - 6.6 magnitude! Very scary. Two trains missing now and its inevitable the death toll will rise. Radioactive vapour to be released to ease pressure on nuclear plants!!!

Makes you think, I once stayed on the 33rd floor of a hotel in Japan and in the room was an earthquake kit - it consisted of a 3" mag torch.

I hope the world rallies around this strange but enticing country in the same way it did following the Indonesian tsunami.

Earthquakes has the recent week increased in the area, and the seismologists tells that a big one was expected, but not near as big as this one. The energy in this eq is about 1000 time bigger than that which was hitting Haiti.
I feel sorry for the people of Japan, but I,m sure they will overcome this disaster too

The little bit I've picked up this morning indicates that: 1) Waves have hit the Big Island of Hawaii and water running down the streets of what I expect is Kona. Typically Tropical should have a good update in due course as he lives there. 2) A lot of damage to boats and the harbour at Santa Cruz, California (south of San Fransisco about 50 miles). Pete

About 2 foot waves here in Southern California, but 3 people taking pictures got swept into the sea, and they only found 2.

The West side of the Big Island was hit pretty bad. Part of the road fronting the ocean (Alii Drive) is still closed to both vehicles and pedestrian traffic. There is a policeman at every walkway, alleyway, parking lot, etc., to prevent access. Keauhou Bay at the South end of Kona was hit bad too, the Kona Yacht Club and the Fairwinds Tours buildings both are gone. Extensive damage at the King Kamehameha Hotel, Four Seasons and Kona Village Resort, they all are closed. Bubba Gumps restaurant has all its furniture in the water and there is a two-story house floating(!) in the Kealakekua Bay.

I live in the tsunami zone and we evacuated around 2AM. (Fortunately, my office is not in the zone, so we went there.) Our property did not get damaged but we couldn't go back home until 2PM, they lifted the Tsunami Advisory at that time and opened the road to our area.

Just received an email from a friend in Tokyo. He left his office near the Tokyo Tower at about 2200 last night and walked all the way to his home in southern Tokyo near the Yokohama border line. He arrived at 0800 this morning. He did stop for a few bowls of noodles on the way though. :D He says mass transit still not running, taxis all full, constant tremors, and a 6.0 on the other side of the country in the Sea of Japan at 0400 this morning. I'm just seeing on the news a report of a nuclear power plant explosion that could lead to a meltdown worse than Chernobyl.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Yes, I've just seen that and it doesn't look good, it's clearly a considerable explosion at a nuclear power station which had reported earlier problems cooling a reactor.

Yes, this is now the big concern. The plant in question is 40 years old, and of a type that I believe is no longer built. A couple of links here that show the basic design. The damaged unit is of the "boiling water" design.

http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/bwrs.html

http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/basic-ref ... d-pwr.html

The big difference between these designs is that in the PWR type there is complete isolation between the water heated by the reactor, and the steam that is produced to drive the turbines, whereas in the earlier type the steam is in contact with the reactor.

I'm just hearing now that the cooling system has failed at a second Japanese nuclear power station.

There's reports that tons of 'coolant' is being flown from the USA to Japan. I guess that means those reactors don't use regular water? Pete

I haven't got a clue Pete but you've just given me a vision of a panicky looking guy in an orange boiler-suit at the Japanese version of 7/11 with a basket full of litre bottles!
