That Vespa takes me back to my "Mod" days in the 60's. Was going to buy my first car, so needed to sell it - for about 30 pounds as I remember. Saw it a few days later with some old boy riding it (suppose that would be me now), gone were my crash bars, lights, mirrors etc, to be replaced by the mother of all widscreens and driving oh so slow - it broke my heart.

Wonder what ever became of it?

Slightly off topic, but what is the maximum number of people you've seen riding on a two-wheeler in the LoS? :)

60th anniversary of the iconic Vespa and The bikini

Post by dr dave soul monsta »

by KAREN KAY, Daily Mail

A pair of design classics, the bikini and the Vespa have endured the whimsies of faddish trends and cultural change to remain forever in our hearts.

Just mentioning the word bikini conjures images of sunshine, glamour and happy days. And Vespas: well, who could argue that those Italians aren't the epitome of cool, whizzing through the back streets of Rome on their pastel-coloured 'motorinos'.

But the bikini, certainly, wasn't always so popular: so outraged was conservative America when it first appeared in 1946 that it was a rare being who ventured out in public in her revolutionary and revealing two-piece.

And the furore didn't go away: in Catholic countries such as Spain, Portugal and Italy this most minimal of garments was banned.

In 1957, when a bikini-clad Brigitte Bardot frolicked in And God Created Woman, Modern Girl magazine sniffed: "It is hardly necessary to waste words over the so-called bikini since it is inconceivable that any girl with tact and decency would ever wear such a thing."

Tell that to Ursula Andress, Raquel Welch and Halle Berry.

And talking of celebrity endorsement, what could be better than the gamine Audrey Hepburn riding a Vespa, with the suave Gregory Peck, in the 1953 classic Roman Holiday? As product placement goes, it was a PR coup.

Hollywood stars clamoured to get their own Vespa, even macho names such as Marlon Brando, Charlton Heston and John Wayne.

Today, in cities around the globe, men and women hop on their Vespas hoping to capture just a fraction of that Italian sophistication.

No matter that on a rainy day in London it's hard to look chic when your Capri pants are drenched through. Audrey wannabees the world over can live the Hepburn lifestyle just by owning one of the sophisticated scooters.

When it comes to design classics, it's all about the dream.

I have only had four on my Honda Wave, but that included two fully-grown farangs with my girlfriend driving, sat on the frame.
We got a strange look from the security guard when we arrived at the Hilton.
