Hi Guys! I just heard this news in Australia tonight and was honestly shocked. I mean I was in Thailand 6 months ago when Samak got in and have been following the Thai newspapers here and there and seen the going ons with PAD and such. All I can say is I hope this doesn't lead to violence.

Thought I would throw a thought in the mix. I think everyone knows the Issan pretty much is the key to election victory and their has been talk about the military getting involved. I personally know a few army guys and they all really like Samak and Thaksin and many are not even from Issan. The army is made up of mostly Issan soldiers in the lower ranks but it is still enough to have strength there. [ Edited by Mod ]

Would be nice to hear other opinions on the matter. :)

Mods you better step - there is a suggestion in the above post about someone who cannot be mentioned.
I think the Poster is out of Thailand and may not realise the seriousness of his suggested line of discussion.

Interesting to see the mobs on TV today, wearing yellow shirts but also covering faces with everything.

Sort of a conflict here.

Are you just wearing a yellow shirt because you don't want to be shot?

If you are a true believer, then show your face! Must be just rent-a-mob.

(BangkokPost.com) - Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej said he has ordered the arrest of five leaders of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) that led protesters to lay siege on Government House and government ministries Tuesday morning.
He also confirmed at a televised press conference for foreign media that about 85 people, accused of seizing control of the state-run National Broadcasting Services of Thailand (NBT) television station were detained this morning.
Meanwhile, deputy police spokesman Surapon Thuanthong said police will ask for approval of arrest warrants for the PAD core leaders on Wednesday.
He added that police have gathered evidence against them since May 25.

Image Although there is a lot of background to this and many thoughts on what is happening and why, HHAD cannot - for obvious reasons, allow discussion on the Thai monarchy.

Violence is the last thing that anyone wants and instigators can be part of any crowd irrelevant of their political persuasion. We've seen these protests so many times before, all we can hope is that the military do stay out of it, Sondhi sticks to his words, and it ends peacefully (and we get rid of Samak!).

The beeb world service is showing pictures of the Thai riot police evicting the protestors from government house. So I guess that Sondhimedia united have still not won a match, sounds like they have picked up 85 yellow and red cards and that Samakshiniwatra united win again, this time shaken not stirred. The rough estimates are that there were about 30,000 protesters, I have no idea of the exact number of Thai residents in Thailand but my guess is somewhere around 65 million, there are 4 million in the armed services. It sounds like the usual Thai apathy is still continuing, the "shrug the shoulders" brigade continue in their downtrodden way whilst the rich will continue to make decisions that suit them. Sondhi & Samak have managed to make Thailand a no go area for both tourists and investors for a while again. My vote for man of the match, Shinawatra, another crooked, imported UK resident. Whilst we stand here, severely restricted by his national governments goal posts that are continually being moved he, seemingly is allowed to stay in the UK, free to own as many business's and houses as he likes whilst being wanted in his own country and apparently at the same time, is allowed to interfere with Thai politics! Amazing Thailand!

I find it dificult to grasp the reasoning that an 'alliance for democracy' can demand - by use of force - the overthrow of a government elected by democratic elections.
Or maybe I'm missing something here

They are demanding the resignation of a government that supports (and is supported by) a fugitive who abused his power and swindled the state out of billions of dollars.

Democracy has nothing to do with it, in fact the concept doesn't really exist in Thailand.

The more I read about the PAD (People 'Against' Democracy) the more I don't like their understanding of Democracy.

If they had their way, they would 'appoint' 75% of MP's and hold elections for the other 25%. What in the world is democratic about that?

Stinks of 'jobs for the old boys', whatever way you look at it, Thailand and politics don't go together. MP's just look on the job as a means for a more lucrative grounding for themselves and their family/friends, and the average Thai really doesn't seem to care.

It is only called "democracy" to appease the west. The longer this goes on the more farcical and open to ridicule it becomes. There is nothing democratic about anything that is going on or who is involved in it.

Agree that the politicians here simply want to line their own and those close to them's pockets.

Can anyone remember the last time something urgently needed and positive for the country was passed into law?

Sorry, I remember that the fine for not wearing a motorbike helmet went up recently.

:agree: with both of you.
Can anyone remember the last time something urgently needed and positive for the country was passed into law?
How about these urgently needed measures in recent years:

Cultural training to stop people saying 'hello' when answering the telephone.
Restrictions on petrol station opening times after dark.
Investigations into work permits for beggars.
Nationwide restrictions on alcohol sales times.
Clamp downs on immigration policies for foreigners wanting to stay in Thailand and spend their money.
Shutting down of TV stations after midnight.
Bannings of skimpy clothing during Songkran.
Censorship of cigarette smoke in movies.
Enforced early closing times of tourist beer bars.
Increase in operating requirements and taxation on fledgling businesses.
Clock changes so everyone can sing the anthem at the same time.

These are just the ones off the top of my head, good to see they have their priorities right - southern violence, education, hospitals, transportation, technology ????? Who cares!

In 2006 we arrived in BKK on 9/16, this year we will arrive on 9/12. It was pretty much a non-issue in 2006, but I am not so sure the same will hold true this go-round.

This is the big problem I see with the PAD; instead of doing some work to come up with an agenda that might appeal to the masses in the rural regions and give them some chance in an election, they have decided to change the whole system of government to ensure that the Bangkok elite maintain control.

If they got their way it would cause deep divisions in the country, the people in the countryside have now seen that they can influence the politics of the country and trying to take that away from them could be very dangerous.

It seems to me though that if they can only muster 30,000 supporters in a city the size of Bangkok, they are not going to get anywhere. How could you claim legitimacy to change the system of government if that is all the support you are getting from the people?

Someone needs to take the time to come up with a political party that can appeal to the whole population.

If the PAD really wanted a useful role then they should try a bit of election monitoring to spot every time the PPP or their cronies pay for votes. Infiltrate the Issan village headman system...pay large bounties for solid evidence of corrupt activities. Report all findings to the EC.

Voters found accepting bribes loose their voting rights for 5 years. No appeal.

Village headmen who are found to be corrupt are convicted and imprisoned and loose voting rights forever. No appeal.

Then the EC should scrap the current system of red and yellow cards...what a joke that is. Red cards only. Any hint of corruption and you are banned for 5 years. The particular constituency election is re-run with the original candidates minus the offender, whose party is not allowed to be represented. Succesful election corruption cases result in convictions through the courts and jail time for offenders.

Expand that rule....over 50 candidates for any party found guilty of corruption and the whole party is disbanded and banned...all members, including immediate family such as brothers, sisters, dogs and cats....all banned.

No political lobbying activity for five days before elections...no boozy parties the night before etc....voters can drink if they like, but may be subject to breath tests at poll stations....smell of booze...loose your vote. Turn up in a party bus....loose your vote.

Serving politicians found guilty of corrupt activities - 10 years in jail and all voting rights withdrawn for good, lifelong ban in politics extends to all family members.

That might just weed out the vote buying and corruption....and might just save a democracy that is in its infancy.

will they do it? will they hell....this is the land of mai pen rai. :cuss:
