'Hovering ship' photographed off Cornish coast by walker

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-cornwall-56286719 (Second photo at link)

Images of what appears to be a hovering ship have been captured as the result of a rare optical illusion off the coast of England.

David Morris took a photo of the ship near Falmouth, Cornwall.

BBC meteorologist David Braine said the "superior mirage" occurred because of "special atmospheric conditions that bend light".

He said the illusion is common in the Arctic, but can appear "very rarely" in the UK during winter.

Mr Morris said he was "stunned" after capturing the picture while looking out to sea from the hamlet of Gillan

Mr Braine said: "Superior mirages occur because of the weather condition known as a temperature inversion, where cold air lies close to the sea with warmer air above it.

"Since cold air is denser than warm air, it bends light towards the eyes of someone standing on the ground or on the coast, changing how a distant object appears.

"Superior mirages can produce a few different types of images - here a distant ship appears to float high above its actual position, but sometimes an object below the horizon can become visible."

We shouldn't tell the Thai government, they'll want one!!

This would be handy for Royal Thai Navy submarines. I certainly wouldn't want to submerge in one.

Sinkhole 'swallowed' Cumbrian farmer on quad bike

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-cumbria-56290236 (Photos of hole and rescue at link)

A farmer has been pulled to safety from a 60ft (18m) sinkhole which "swallowed" him and the quad bike he was riding.

The ground opened up as he rode across a field at Bowesfield Farm in Stank, south Cumbria, on Thursday.

He was recovered using ropes and pulley systems in an operation involving fire crew and mountain rescue volunteers.

The man, in his seventies, was then airlifted to hospital for treatment to chest and back injuries.

Ian Westall of Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said they were called out at 12:00 GMT.

"The ground just fell away with the weight of the bike on that particular spot and he was swallowed up into the sinkhole", he said.

"We peered down and could see the farmer sat up, and we could just make out the outline of his bike under a mound of earth. I'm sure he was in deep shock."

The opening was about 8ft (2m) wide at the top, but below that opened up "like a wine carafe" which posed additional risk to rescuers, Mr Westall said.

"You've got a lip at the top which went down into a narrow throat, and then there was a large bulbous bottom which opened up 10m (33ft) in one direction and 4m (13ft) in the other.

"Obviously, with unstable ground and people on the surface unsighted, there was an inherent risk."

John Wealthall, from the Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team, described it as "out of the scope of our normal rescues".

The main concern was keeping the rescuers properly roped and securely attached amid concerns another sinkhole could appear.

Of the farmer, he said: "Amazingly he wasn't too badly hurt.

"He had chest pains and quite severe pains in his back and after being assessed by ambulance crew was airlifted to hospital.

"I assume the quad bike has taken quite a lot of the impact on going down, so he has been extremely lucky."

There are a number of early 19th Century disused iron ore mines in the area, making sinkholes an ever-present danger.

He's paid peanuts compared with:

Ryan Kaji (Toys Review) - 7 year old and called in $22 million in 2018 alone. (now worth around $30 million)

Anastasia (cerebral palsy -vids of her progress) $18 million. 5 year old.

There's a whole bunch of under 12 year olds making millions from their youtube channel.

Higher earning ability linked to education

https://www.nationthailand.com/news/30403982 (Chart at link)

There is a direct corelation between education and a person's ability to earn, according to a survey by the National Statistical Office of Thailand.

The higher the education levels of Thais, the higher their earnings, the survey showed.

Disparity of income is a major problem in Thailand and it is attributed mainly to education.

“The higher the level of graduation, the higher the income," the survey shows, linking educational level with earnings.

In 2019, people who earned the highest salary in Thailand were those with doctoral degrees. Their average salary was Bt44,078 a month.

People with no education in Thailand received only Bt6,362 a month, seven times lower than people with a PhD.

The shake your head in disbelief stories are coming hot and heavy today. Here's another one. :banghead:

Culture Ministry decides suicide not 'benefit' of wearing pha khao ma

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... ha-khao-ma

The Culture Ministry has deleted a controversial "benefit" of wearing a traditional waistcloth from its website, after the suggestion it could be used to commit suicide drew unfavourable reactions.

Culture Minister Itthiphol Kunplome said on Monday he had ordered the ministry to delete the information that the many benefits of wearing a waistcloth, or pha khao ma, include that it could be used to hang yourself.

The ministry's website promoted the waistcloth on its website with a long list of its uses - including as a pillow or a towel, or even as a floor covering when it is too old to wear.

One use that drew attention was the final one, the 28th. "Used to hang oneself (when desperate)," it read.

The issue came to light when news media last week picked up on a post by a Facebook user who had been searching for information about pha khao ma and had found the reference to its possible use for suicide on the ministry's website.

The public response was very critical of the ministry.

The controversial benefit of wearing the traditional wraparound was at the bottom of a list that had been posted on a channel on the website to promote tourism and Thai traditions since 2015.

Mr Ithipol said the reference to suicide had now been removed from all the ministry's media channels.

The list of benefits of wearing the traditional attire was provided by local offices, he said, and admitted the information had been checked and screened before it was posted.

This is weird!

The Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) is the deity of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster or Pastafarianism, a social movement that promotes a light-hearted view of religion and opposes the teaching of intelligent design and creationism in public schools. According to adherents, Pastafarianism (a portmanteau of pasta and Rastafarianism) is a "real, legitimate religion, as much as any other".[3] It has received some limited recognition as such.[4][5][6][7][8]
