Pregnant women, seniors to get 1.5m Pfizer jabs donated by US

The government plans to distribute 1.5 million doses of Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine donated by the US government to pregnant women and seniors aged 60 and over in high-infection areas.

Leaked minutes from an official meeting on Sunday show the 1.5 million doses will arrive in Thailand this month before being distributed in July and August.

The minutes also record a senior official apparently advising the government not to give the Pfizer vaccine to doctors, saying “it will imply that the quality of the Sinovac vaccine given to them earlier is low, and it will be difficult for us to find a reasonable excuse”.

The comment sparked outrage on social media. At least two front line medics have reportedly been infected with Covid-19 despite being fully vaccinated with Sinovac.

The minutes also note that possible side effects from the Pfizer vaccine – including headache, chills, nausea and fever – tend to affect males more than females.

A gap between the first and second jabs is three weeks. The leaked minutes also specified that the vaccine will be stored at -60 to -90 degrees Celsius.

The donated vaccine will be targeted at seniors and those over 12 weeks pregnant who live in a Covid-19 red zone or Bangkok and its vicinity.

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul admitted today that the leaked minutes were genuine. However, no final decision has been made about the use of Pfizer vaccine, he added.

The government also admitted it originally planned to roll out 10 million AstraZeneca vaccine doses this month, but only 5-6 million doses would arrive because Thailand was slow to place orders for the vaccines. The company had to send its vaccines to other countries that had also ordered them. As a result, public bookings under various vaccination programmes such as City Hall's Thai Ruam Jai were delayed.

How could they be slow to place orders???????? When was this original plan hatched that it was too late to procure vaccines produced on its own territory?

On the graphic shown in Bangkok Post, shows Johnson & Johnson as being approved in March, then on the same graphic it lists Johnson & Johnson - 'Pending Approval'.

Even the simplest of things promote confusion.

The EU and Germany/Merkel in particular playing political games IMHO, but has any of the AZ vaccines provided in Thailand been produced in India? I'm assuming produced locally, but may (again) be mistaken....

Likely just effecting "Brexit Britain" at this stage.... Though Merkel & co. will back down.

Made locally, 9 months after Siam Bioscience getting the contract to manufacture for all of SE Asia has turned into one big embarassment. They have recently stated that they can only supply half the vaccines expected locally. The Thai government has said they ordered too late. IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE MANUFACTURED HERE. Ordered too late? That's ridiculous.

The US are donating 1.5 mill Pfizer vaccines to Thailand with a condition that 300,000 are reserved for US citizens.
China sent vaccines for Chinese citizens living here (albeit it's Sinovac)
The French Embassy has emailed their citizens here to get their FREE J % J (one dose). In HH that's Bangkok Hospital. All done within a week of the email.

I'm sure there are others that are taking care of their citizens abroad. Now the UK can donate millions of shots to poorer countries but do nothing for their own citizens abroad.

That, I know zip about but I'm plenty sure there's a lot more politics rather than truth involved in the news on that one.

Will be interesting to find out what the situation truly is - I'll certainly ask the question with local MP's et. al., but let's be fair.........

Is the UK donating vaccines? I think they've donated money to Covax but no actual vaccines.

Didn't they follow the lead of the US at the recent G7 gathering in Cornwall? I thought it was donation of vaccines, but you could be right i.e. a donation of cash to buy vaccine.

all these donations of vaccines are made to CoVAX the program done by WHO and Thailand government refused to join the Covax programm so i think they will get no vaccines by these donations.

My wife says there a big call from Thaksin to return, promising to provide millions of Covid vaccines - I can’t see that being very popular with the Government!!

That was the call a year ago. That's not going to happen.
