Overloading like that should be stopped at the many police checks, but going to and from Samui last week, the police road blocks were in place and frequent, which slowed traffic. However, only one checkpoint was manned by a single officer, and that officer was busy texting or playing games on his phone.

I've seen several doing that, it must be part of their training.

Rama 2 Road guilty of being a repeat accident offender

https://thethaiger.com/news/national/ra ... t-offender

Another accident was reported on the Rama 2 Road where the U-turn bridge collapsed two weeks ago. Yesterday, an iron bar fell from a truck onto the road and almost hit a car.

On July 30, at 8pm, the U-turn bridge over the Rama 2 Road collapsed onto four vehicles. One female passenger was killed at the scene by a five-ton concrete slap, and another construction worker who fell from the bridge later died at a hospital.

A couple of weeks before the collapse, one netizen posted a dashcam video of an accident on the same road. The video featured a heavy steel beam falling onto a pickup making the car bounce into the air. It was only luck that the couple in the pickup were not injured and other cars on the road weren’t hit or damaged.

Last week, a man posted pictures of his damaged car window on Facebook after a tarpaulin full of rainwater fell onto his car from a construction site above him on the Rama 2 Road. The picture shows the hanging tarpaulin on the unfinished bridge. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the incident.

Yesterday, a fourth accident was reported on the road. A sedan car was hit by a 3-metre iron bar that fell from a six-wheel truck working on the construction site.

Luckily, the steel bar didn’t fall directly onto the car. The 50 year old female driver, Thitikarn Siralaksamee, was safe, but her car’s bumper was damaged by the bar.

Thitikarn explained that she was driving alone to Hua Hin in the southern province of Prachuap Khirikhan. She drove from her home in the Sai Mai district of Bangkok and arrived at the accident spot at about 2pm.

Thitikarn saw the iron bar fall from the back of the trunk and broke suddenly to avoid the offending object but couldn’t do it in time.

She said it was lucky that she turned on her emergency lights to warn other cars on the road.

Thitikarn said the Highways Department urged her to claim compensation from the insurance company of the truck as the incident happened due to the recklessness of the truck driver and construction staff.

According to a report on the BBC, there are three main construction projects on the Rama 2 Road that started in 2018 and various minor ongoing road repair projects.

The construction projects have caused huge traffic problems on the road, and accidents.

Many Thai netizens made public that they have witnessed and experienced similar accidents on the road. They believe there would be more because the construction projects are never-ending.

Really, people are going to start to think that highway is haunted!

More concrete falls onto ‘cursed’ Rama II Road in Bangkok, Thailand

https://thethaiger.com/news/bangkok/mor ... k-thailand

Netizens are starting to think that that Bangkok’s Rama II Road is cursed. Yesterday at 11.53am, a slab of broken concrete hanging directly over the busy road fell from a U-turn bridge near Wat Phrom Rangsi temple onto the highway.

It is the fourth time heavy construction materials have fallen onto the road in less than two months. No injuries were reported.

One netizen compared the Rama II Road to a “Final Destination” movie.

Rama II Incident Timeline…

July 14: Dashcam footage reveals the moment a heavy steel beam fell 20 metres through the air, landing just metres in front of an oncoming pickup truck. The truck was flung into the air as the wheels collided with the beam. The couple inside the pickup were unharmed.

July 31: A U-turn bridge over the Rama II road heading towards Bangkok collapsed, falling onto four vehicles and killing two people. One female passenger was killed at the scene and a construction worker who fell from the bridge later died from their injuries in hospital. The incident was also captured by dashcam footage.

August 16: A 3-metre iron bar fell onto a the bumper of a Sedan car on the Rama II road heading outbound from Bangkok. The car was damaged but the 50 year old female driver was unharmed.

August 24: A 80 centimetre by 30 centimetre slab of concrete fell from a U-turn bridge over the Rama II road in Bang Khun Thian district directly onto the expressway’s leftmost lane. No injuries were reported.

Construction workers in the area refused to speak to reporters regarding yesterday’s incident.

Currently, there are three main construction projects going on on the Rama II Road, which began in 2018.

Netizens aren’t sure whether the road is really “cursed” or whether the concurrent incidents are simply more examples of Thailand’s lack of safety standards when it comes to construction work.

Thailand has one of the highest road traffic death rates in the world.

The old surface had been gouged out. The outer beam of the bridge fell without warning onto the Rama II Highway, he said.

The parents of the driver need convicting as well as the boy - they are complicit in allowing him to drive the car

Danish man crashes car into Chiang Mai moat, killing 1

https://thethaiger.com/news/chiang-mai/ ... -killing-1

A Danish man crashed a white sedan into Chiang Mai moat in northern Thailand in the early hours of this morning. He survived but his female Thai passenger could not escape the vehicle in time and drowned.

A 30 year old Danish man was driving through Chiang Mai’s Mueang district “at a high speed” when he lost control, crashed into a tree on the footpath and spun off into Chiang Mai moat, which encircles the old city.

Chiang Mai Emergency Centre was informed of the accident at 12.55am and deployed rescue workers from the Ruamjai Chiang Mai Foundation to the scene.

Rescue workers found the Danish man, soaking wet, standing in his boxer shorts, in a state of shock. He said his passenger was unable to escape.

It took around 30 minutes for rescue workers to pull the Thai woman from the wreckage and out of the moat. Rescue workers said it was difficult because the car was overturned under the water.

Rescue workers performed CPR on the Thai woman, who was estimated to be between 30-40 years old. She was rushed to Maharaj Nakhon Hospital where she was pronounced dead in the emergency room.

The Danish man said he had been out to a party before the accident and admitted he was speeding on his drive home which is when he lost control and crashed into Chiang Mai moat.

Polwat Sudta, a rescue worker, said he dived into the water as soon as he arrived at the scene. He said it took 30 minutes to locate the car, smash the windows and cut the seatbelt to retrieve the Thai woman from the vehicle. However, when they pulled her out of the water, her heart had already stopped, said Polwat.

Chiang Mai’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department sent officers in wet suits into the moat to check there were no more fatalities. The department used a forklift to retrieve the car from the water.

Police came to inspect the scene and found that a lamppost and a tree had been hit by the car. The car wreckage was taken to Chiang Mai Provincial Police Station to be used as evidence.

The Danish man will be further questioned by the police to find out the true details of the accident.

Drunk police doctor who crashed Porsche killing 2 in Thailand avoids prison

Today, Thon Buri Provincial Court sentenced a police doctor to three years imprisonment and a fine of 101,000 baht for speeding and drink-driving in his Porsche, causing a crash that killed two people and seriously injured one more person in Bangkok back in August 2021.

However, although the defendant pleaded guilty on all counts, the court suspended his punishment for two years, leaving him a free man for now. After two years, the court will reconvene again. If he is well-behaved, the possibility exists that he will avoid prison completely.

They believed the brakes of the two vans overheated
Not at all surprised. Like many drivers here, they will 'ride' the brakes coming downhill. To many, it's just common sense to use the gears when coming down hill. I can come all the way down Hin Lek Fai without using the brakes once. If I'm following another vehicle it's noticeable that that vehicle has it's brake lights on all the way down.
They don't realise that as well as losing traction which will inhibit control, they are causing unnecessary cost when the brakes need replacing.
