This is not the first time that this has happened. I believe bicyles have no place on main Thai roads.
If there is no seperate cycle track, then it may be a good idea just to ride on offroad tracks.

Canadian cyclist struck, killed by pickup
https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -by-pickup
KANCHANABURI: A Canadian woman who worked for a non-governmental organisation was killed when her road bicycle was hit by a pickup truck on Saturday.
Pol Col Chairat Chananant, deputy superintendent of Muang police station in this central province, said on Saturday Marnie Scott, 49, died at the crash site on a bypass in Muang district.
Police and a doctor from Paholpolpayuhasena Hospital pronounced her dead at the scene.
Scott was hit by a pickup as she was changing lanes on the ring road in preparation for a U-turn, police said. She was cycling for exercise and to enjoy nature with her husband Joseph, 50.
The husband successfully made the U-turn before the pickup slammed into his wife, wrecking the bicycle. She was wearing a helmet at the time.
The couple worked for Christian Freedom International in Mae Sot district of Tak province. They and two children were on vacation at a hotel near the River Kwai Bridge.
The international NGO "aids, equips and advocates for Christians who are oppressed or persecuted for their faith," according to its website.
Mr Joseph said the pickup was travelling at high speed when it hit his wife, and he did not hear any sound of the vehicle braking.
Driver Chaiwat Chutoh, 23, said he thought the cyclist would allow his pickup to pass after he sounded his horn.
He said he was unable to apply the brakes in time to avoid hitting Scott's bicycle.
Pol Col Chaiwat said the driver was charged with negligent driving leading to the deaths of other persons. Police were considering other charges against him pending evidence to back up their probe, he added.
RIP.

Re: Minivan, bus and road accidents
No links at the moment as picked it all up from Thai Channel 3 News. Last night yet another huge piece of an unopened overpass under construction fell off at that area of Rama II before going into Bangkok. This is the third in about 10 days where pieces have fallen off and hit vehicles. Last night's incident someone, or more than one, were killed.
Hopefully they're starting to wake up that the contractor is doing something terribly wrong with construction and/or materials.
I would avoid the area completely if possible. Unfortunately it gets all the traffic coming from and going to Hua Hin.

Falling U-turn bridge kills two on highway
https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... on-highway (Photo & Video)
SAMUT SAKHON: Two people were killed and one was injured when a beam of a U-turn flyover fell on to Rama II Highway in Muang district Sunday night.
The incident happened at the 34th kilometre marker on Rama II Highway aka Thon Buri-Pak Tho in front of Vibharam Samutsakhon Hospital at about 8.30pm.
The huge concrete beam, about 10 metres long weighing about five tonnes, together with its concrete rail guard fell onto three vehicles passing underneath the U-turn flyover that was closed for maintenance.
The beam hit directly a Chevrolet car and partly a pickup truck and an empty oil tank truck on the Bangkok-bound side of the highway.
A woman who was the front passenger of the car was killed instantly. Its driver was pulled out of the car by eyewitnesses. Five people on the pickup truck were narrowly unscathed as only the front of the truck was crunched. Two workers were injured and one of them later succumbed to wounds. They were working on the flyover.
The incident caused heavy traffic congestion on the highway as workers were removing the debris from its express lanes. Motorists could use only its frontage lanes. Highways officials closed the expressway lanes for fear of the unsecure structure of the U-turn flyover.
The Highways Department had closed the old U-turn flyover since June 23 for maintenance due to its wear and tear.
It had been heavily used by big trucks. Its surface was eroded and showed the steel rods that reinforced it. The maintenance was earlier set for completion at the end of this month.

Re: Minivan, bus and road accidents
Our illustrious health minister is the owner of the company doing the new construction, I believe.
Some of it is being done by Italian Thai Co., the former owner of which likes eating black panthers.
However, that U turn bridge has been there for years and not part of the new extension. They even admit that the thing was in a bad state of repair! About what to expect in this country.

Re: Minivan, bus and road accidents
IMO they're going to have to tear that entire U-turn structure down and build new. I can't see them being able to fix it if it's so structurally unsound. That more or less means people will be using the frontage road in that area for a year or so.
EDIT: I'd be surprised if they allowed any traffic under it at all in that current condition. I would guess the road will now be blocked off until further notice.

I doubt it, they will just put an old plastic water bottle on a stick to warn drivers to use the one remaining lane on the U-turn bridge.I would guess the road will now be blocked off until further notice.

The tragic accident of the u-turn point where the cement beams fell on top of the passers-by on Rama 2 Road, causing 2 deaths, reflecting the insecurity of car users on the road. that is always at risk of accidents from road repairs And this was not the first serious accident. because from the statistics of the Samut Sakhon Charitable Foundation Sri Samut Rescue finds that there have been many accidents from construction on Rama 2 Road.
"Chanchai Saengchae" Rescue Officer Samut Sakhon Charitable Foundation Sri Samut Rescue revealed to “the news team drilled the issue. Thairath Online" said that helping the injured from yesterday's accident was difficult. because the cement beams are large and the U-turn bridge that fell down is being repaired Some of the injured were workers working on falling beams.
This u-turn bridge had a car fire on the bridge that had to be closed for repairs in 2004 and then opened for use. but because it is a bridge with heavy traffic There are ten-wheeled vehicles that are used frequently. causing the bridge to be damaged quickly
The accident on Rama 2 Road was partly due to road repairs. Especially at the 34th kilometer in front of Vibharam Hospital. bypass When elevated roads are constructed, accidents are frequent. “Rama 2 Road in the past has been renovating the road surface for 10 years until recently the renovation has been completed. But there is an elevated road construction project. Makes people passing by to feel that this road is not finished. The cement beam accident is not the first case. Another factor is the damaged road surface. because there is a large cargo truck running regularly
From the statistics of the Samut Sakhon Charitable Foundation, it was found that accidents occurred during the repair of the surface of Rama 2 Road in the past when compared to the construction of the elevated highway now. There was an accident that happened nearby. In the morning, there will be an average of 3-4 accidents per day, and in the evening, there are 6-7 accidents per day, mostly pick-up trucks and sedans. In total, there were more than 10 accidents in one day.
Construction sites on roads are another risk factor that causes accidents. “The construction on Rama 2 Road reflects Thailand's troubled construction management because over 20 years this road has not been completed. When the road surface has been renovated, there will be an elevated road project. But management is still quite problematic. because the road area below is a different unit from the one that oversees the construction of the elevated road.”
For roads that are at risk of accidents from road construction From the assessment are as follows:
Petchkasem Road, which leads directly to the south. It is the main route that has been used for a long time. The road surface is not smooth and relatively low. Accidents often occur at intersections. including a relatively narrow U-turn point causing large car accidents frequently
Road to the North From Ang Thong Province up Many tunnels and underpasses are now being built. There is a risk of an accident on the detour before reaching the road construction zone.
Solving problems from road construction accidents Contractors should be strictly following international rules. especially the warning signs that are clear before the construction area And the sign should not be set too close to the construction area. Because it will cause the car that is running at a slow speed to slow down.
