To devs: is it possible to create an 'online image sharing and image hosting service' account that images can be uploaded to by anyone in possession of the login details (but particularly the regular posters, for example Caps competition, weekly cinema postings and members' trip reports) and linked in HHH posts? That way images can be stored permanently online but not strain the resources of the site, and still be monitored by HHH mods ?

I was going to suggest imgur.com but trying to sign in to my account there to it after not using it for a long while I received an HTTP ERROR 500 message meaning that the site's servers are temporarily overloaded. I never used to have this sign in error so maybe now imgur is used by too many people.

As Lev has posted previously, it's a done deal. The decision wasn't taken lightly and a great deal of work has been put in over numerous months notably from the "Original Mods" who have kept the Forum going for many years.

Suggestions and comments are always appreciated - we need them moving forward, but even as a "Newbie Mod", believe me, "Lev" and other Mods have put in huge efforts and committed their time without any financial reward (loss actually) over close to two decades - hence the fact that it was decided not to ask for donations again. All the Forum needs/Wants is commitment and "Input" from members, information rather than financial - As many will know, I've not been back to Thailand/HH or Asia for many years, but I still have an interest, memories and love for the place and of course a Chinese wife and family which of course connects me to the Region.

Keep the comments going, keep the friendship or foes going, keep everything going - this is not "Social Media", this is and should be "Family"! Hell's teeth, we argue, we bitch, we complain - we talk Politics, we talk Sport.... Sounds like family to me! Keep it up!!

A simple question about photo hosting sites. If we use these to add photos to the forum, rather than, say any attachment facility, does that mean the new forum can manage unlimited numbers of photos?

I should add I already use such a service to post photos on a forum that covers a particular hobby of mine.

Not quite. It works by embedding an actual photo into the forum page via the 'insert image' option. The URL is basically 'wrapped around' by the symbol for that functionn at either end. I don't know the technicalities behind that, but Buksi will. Such forums wouldn't be able to exist if this function meant all the space used was down to the forum and not the host.

The cheapest image hosting service I see is USD 2.00 per month, I don't know how robust that particular website is. The advantage is that the image will always be available if the poster needs to delete the file from their own computer, or even just turn their computer off. I'm really not sure about the mechanics now as I didn't use it for a few years, but yes basically it's uploading the image to the storage site and including a URL in your post on HHF.

ANYWAY, maybe we can see how the new site functions and decide if something like this is useful. We're told that thumbnails will always be viewable on the new site; if they're good enough quality then in almost all cases no-one will need to see the original high definition image unless they wanted to download it for their own use.

Postimage.org is a free service. I have been using it for years, but only for those photos I want to add elsewhere. They came into being after google and the like withdrew their sharing facility.

PS. I am not advocating thiis for use by the forum. Just for anyone really. The only (watch) forum I used that hosted their own service charged £5pa for the privilage. Its still used now, but not by me.

Well in that case I hope that (if the thumbnails of posted images are poor, we have yet to see that; hopefully it's not an issue) regular posters of images would sign up to a free service so that images are not inaccessible while the poster's computer is not turned on, or actually lost when deleted on the poster's computer.

As I said and linked to, FREE SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE.

This could be a major downside to the new forum. Let's see.

The existing forum will remain online for about a month, giving you time to copy or save anything you need. After that, it will be taken offline and archived. Going forward, this ProBoards forum will be the only active version of HHF.
Registration and viewing are currently open to everyone, but if we experience a flood of spam or bots, we may restrict access to registered members only. The 'HHFadmin' account is a shared one used by the moderators to make announcements.

Attachment storage is limited to just 200Mb due to the free hosting tier.
Please resize your images before uploading — anything over 200Kb will be deleted. (A separate guide on image resizing will be posted.) All images will be deleted once we get close to the storage limit, so we can start again. Those who post a lot of images should use a free image hosting provider such as postimages.org or Google Photos for galleries.

The new forum is mobile-friendly and easier to use on phones and tablets, no need for third-party apps like Tapatalk.
