So what was it in the end?
Redmi Pad SE, 8GB memory, 256GB storage, 11" screen, 8,000 mAh battery, standard USB port. The CPU is not high-end, but you wouldn't expect it for that price, and we don't need it for our uses, which are mainly TV when traveling, reading, and basic games (Mrs B has discovered Mahjong).

Sounds perfect. Very similar spec to my Samsung, but for a lot less money. Your uses are similar to mine, so it should serve you well. I only stuck with Samsung because of familiarity.

Aside from price, the reason I tend to avoid Samsung these days is that they appear to be going down the Apple route of using non-standards, charging extra for essentials such as cables/chargers, taking away useful functions/ports, and trying to lock users into their ecosystem. Though to be fair, most tech giants are doing the same.

Yes, but essentials such as cables/charger tend to outlive a device. I did a winge when I bought my tablet because I thought it was yet another different charger, which it was. However, it had been so long since I had bought a new device, I didn't realise they had standardised in the meantime, and my existing kit was obsolete  .

Do we really need a new charger everytime we buy a new device? Even with my limited kit, I find myself giving chargers away to family.

The problem now is that we have so many devices, whereas before it was just one, so yes, all those chargers are unnecessary, but that was just one aspect. We don't even use the one that came with the tablet, as it charges much faster with the one that came with the phone! But this is only doable because they're all standard ports so you don't need a different charger for every device.

That’s how I ended up with the Redmi, I read the posts you made about the Samsung and when I thought about buying one, I saw the Xaomi on Amazon for less and thought it would do for the amount I use it.
