Hua Hin nightlife crackdown

Post by buksida »

This is obviously a typical knee-jerk reaction to the dodgy cop shooting the soldier in the illegal nightclub on Soi 80 run by more dodgy cops.

Everything has a strict midnight closing enforcement now, even the big 'Chomjan' nightclub. Its like being back in curfew times with police raids and torches in faces after the witching hour. There were a few lock-ins down 94 last night ... covid lockdown flash-backs all round.

Great for tourism and local businesses - Hua Hin's finest doing what they do best because they cant control their own!

I know my son hasn't found it to be a problem, but he isn't adverse to being locked in (baptism of fire during Covid) - I can't think of anything worse myself. IMHO open fronted bars is one of Thailand's BIG plus factors. However, I'm an old git, and don't drink very often :D

Obviously, you can still get lock-ins; these bars struggle to survive as it is, especially in low season. Just bloody ridiculous that a rogue cop stuffs it up for everyone else, maybe they should lock themselves in at night.

What is the official Thailand closing time? I often see crackdowns in various places around Thailand, and Hua Hin often seems more lenient than most of the country.

Total opposite, Hua Hin is one of the worst places in Thailand. Phuket, Samui, Pattaya etc, can stay open until 4. When the Gestapo decided to extend opening hours in tourist hot spots, Hua Hin wasn't included.

Hua Hin was 1am or there abouts before, now its strictly midnight closing, even for nightclubs ... happy holidays, you'll prolly get better nightlife in the Yemen!

Yes, but what is the official time. I know places abuse it, and there are some later zones, but what is the official time across most of Thailand?

Nothing is "official", its Thailand. Each place has its own rules, and Hua Hin's are the some of the strictest. It used to go back to the 'palacial influence', but nowadays its just the brown mafia making easy money and keeping things cracked down here (aside from their own places).

Well, the one thing I've learnt about Thailand is they love FREE money.

As an almost non-drinker, I guess I'm the last one who should be commenting, but I watch my son, his wife and all of their friends. During normal times, coming home between 4am and 5am is normal (without lock-ins). Yes, I agree, lock-ins seem to be essential at the moment.

I don't see those times as bad, because he sometimes doesn't finish work until after 11pm.

I've just got back from Nongkhai where I'm probably going to move to.
I went for 3 days towards the end of last year and stayed 3 weeks. In that time I never saw a cop on the streets. The bars are allowed to stay open as long as they like (obviously they need customers).
I arrived in Nongkhai 10 days ago at 2am (intended breaking the journey in Korat, then Kon Kaen but just couldn't get a hotel. Carried on to Udon and then to Nongkhai) A bar I know was quite busy at 2am and thankfully one of the staff fixed me up with a hotel. Left there around 3:30 am. Nothing unusual for Nongkhai. The police seem to have the opinion of 'live and let live'.

Yes, but it's anywhere - even in Hua Hin. How many BIB do you see in Hua Hin after dark except at revenue collection points? You rarely see them during the day also. Unless you're doing something really bad, they aren't the ogres many make out. Yes, if for e.g. you are caught drunk driving, it's a fair cop.

We came home from the footie last night and watched Liverpool thrash Man Utd on TV, which didn't finish until after midnight. My son then walked down to his local for a few beers. Blind eyes are order of the day. He's not up yet, so lock-in or not I do not know.

Your son may be a pro at sniffing out late night spots, or those owned by cops that can get away with it, but the fact remains that there is a crackdown at the moment, and closing times are midnight, and the cops are doing the rounds to enforce it.

Tourists are not going to know about these after-hours 'soi secrets', they're just going to see shutters go down at midnight and cop cars roving the streets at night looking for violators, which is ludicrous for a tourist town.

Hua Hin has always been pretty anal that way, and as said above, it's not the same in other places.

Yes, even out in Hin Lek Fai the bars are closing at midnight at the moment.
Luckily, I'm now at an age where I'm normally home by then anyway but it's a bit mad that this was all brought about by a police connected incident in the first place.

I’ve been a tourist in many places all over the world and found that if the bars close at midnight thats when they close. No big deal. I plan my night accordingly.

How many people on this thread or forum frequent the bars, or dare I say it nightclubs, in Hua Hin between midnight and 5am? Very very few, if any I suspect. BB’s family excepted.

Police worldwide would tighten up bar rules, even temporarily, if a murder by shooting had taken place in an illegally open late night bar. It won’t last long.
