Good article from Shearer here about Southgates England.

Its a little scary to think that Palmer only came on because Trippier was injured.
And whilst Southgate is fiercely loyal to his 1st eleven, he can be brutal in his aims for England and be dismissive of others. When you hear Bellingham talk of defeating all the negativity around the team, you just know that Southgate is preaching from any Govt/companies training manual, and it's working for him, just look how blinded Declan Rice has become when he talks of the messiah. But if you're not in that group, you are of little further importance. Earlier in the season, Chilwell was slowly returning from injury, he hadn't actually resumed playing, when he was called up by Southgate. Pochettino wasn't happy, but I remember thinking, well if it keeps him involved, and bonding with the group, that's okay. He played Chilwell in the next two games. I don't watch England in friendlies of euro league nonsense, or whatever it is called. Anyway, he played badly, unsurprisingly, returned injured, never really recovered by seasons end, just had a couple of games, and wasn't selected by England. His treatment by Southgate saw Pochettino really criticise Southgate, he was fuming. It seemesd to have affected Chilwell as well, as implied by Pochettino, it left him in a bad way.
