With all of these claims about police corruption, it almost certainly is part of a pyramid setup, where maybe the guys at the top are creaming off a large part of the cake, but you can bet your life that they’ll be crumbs for many further down the food chain

And talking about bribery and corruption - what do you think was involved here? https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... speed-data

I've been away this weekend, and whilst in Phitsanulok this morning, I encountered the largest open example of police corruption I've seen. It was all Thai on Thai. A police road check as far as the eye could see - it was a dual carriageway, so a lot of vehicles. As far as I could see, every vehicle was checked, and every one was fined. Thankfully, I was an innocent bystander sitting in a minibus. The driver was fuming, being made to pay for an imaginary crime. The police wanted 500฿, he argued it down to 300฿. Aren't the BIB risking accidents making all road users drive whilst angry?
  • 2 things come to mind, if the fine for this crime was 500฿, who was making up the 200฿ shortfall.
  • Such arguments in a traffic queue should not be allowed to disrupt traffic flow even more, but Thai on Thai, of course they all argued, and of course fines were reduced. The resultant delay in travelling time was suffered by all.
It's so long since I've seriously driven up that way, I'd forgotten the BIB's imagination up there were only 2nd to Bangkok's BIB.

Final thing, how is that payment of 300฿ makes the problem go away, and it was suddenly legal to travel another 7 hours? Surely, our vehicle should have been impounded until the problem had been rectified. Of course, that would most likely have meant waiting for the officer concerned to visit a psychiatric clinic.

The 'Thailand news summary' thread should be renamed to the 'dodgy Thai police' thread ...

A police lieutenant with the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) in Nonthaburi province has been arrested on charges of assembling air rifles and selling them online.

The officer, identified only as Pol Lt Punnatad, 35, was arrested at his townhouse in tambon Bang Rak Noi of Muang district, said Pol Lt Gen Worawat Watnakornbancha, the CCIB commissioner.

Police found and seized three high-pressure air rifles, 200 round pellets, 150 scopes, 100 air rifle stocks and other components, including air pumps and hand grips, he said.

The majority of the illegal guns in this country (1 in 6 Thais have one apparently) come from the police ... no surprises there.
