The bikers thread; trips, news, chat, all things motorcycle

Post by buksida »

Yes. If you have an expensive lid, lock it to the bike or take it with you.

Although I’m sure it does happen, it seems to be a very infrequent event out here - whereas it’s similar in most of the UK to Detroit - if it’s left in the open, chances are very high it’ll be gone by the time you get back.

I always leave the cheap scooter helmets with the bike, but the expensive full-face big bike lid goes where I go!

My comments and experiences are associated with the Honda PCX/Wave type of bike, whose riders tend to have the cheaper range of helmets, but for something upmarket I’d also be reluctant to leave it on display.

I've got a twenty year old half helmet that we got with our first Honda Wave, ( from around 2003 ). I've always used it for going around Hin Lek Fai because it's so easy to plonk it on your head.
A couple of years ago, a new dog we had chewed the chin strap off of it, so as punishment, I cut off a part the dogs lead and got it sewn on to the chin strap to replace the missing part.
It's never been stolen.

Doesn't sound like it'll be much help if you come off though. :duck: I remember the old plastic 'icecream tub' helmets that would break if you stood on one ... they're unlikely to get pinched!

On a different note, after 25 years of living here, I finally rode the back road to Cha-am yesterday - its basically the canal road that goes all the way through so you don't have to go near the hellish Petchkasem at all! A much more relaxing (and safer) ride.

I'm not really sure what I'm posting here, but I've just seen it advertised, and it looks like bike racing (including some big bikes) on the beach at Suan Son NOW. I thought bikers might be interested.

Not for 1,200 baht a ticket ... unless that's the entrance fee to race. :naughty:

'Proud' 20,000 bikers finish Dave Myers tribute ride

Thousands of motorcyclists have arrived at the end of a mammoth ride from London to Cumbria to celebrate the life of Hairy Biker Dave Myers.

The TV chef died in February, at the age of 66, after he was diagnosed with cancer.

"Dave Day" has seen a 25km (16-mile) long remembrance procession, made up of about 20,000 bikers, journeying from the capital to Myer's coastal home town of Barrow-in-Furness.

Fellow Hairy Biker Si King addressed the crowds waiting to greet the bikers and said: "Thank you. You’ve made David Myers very proud."

His words drew cheers, and Myers' widow Lili said: "Dave was always a Barrovian in his heart, he loved Barrow and he wanted to put Barrow on the map.

"And today, beyond his grave, he’s done it again."

The procession began to arrive from about 16:00 BST, waved on by thousands of people, and continued to stream into the town into the evening.

One onlooker, Marie, who watched the procession from a bridge near Burton services, around 40 miles from the finish point, said: "The atmosphere was lovely, warm and quite emotional to see so many bikers.

"We were pleased to wave them in and welcome them to our beautiful county of Cumbria."

Organisers said the service station was closed due to the sheer number of travellers.

The procession had planned to stop there for a break but instead drove straight on towards Barrow.

As the riders set off on Saturday morning, fellow Hairy Biker Si King described it as "amazing" and a "celebration of the best friend that I've lost".

Many of those who gathered at the start point, the Ace Cafe in north London, were wearing Hawaiian shirts.

King said of the crowd: "Everybody's got that lovely Dave sartorial elegance about them, ie dodgy shirt.

"Some of them have had them specially printed, it's remarkable."

'Irritatingly positive'

He added: "You never know how these things are going to impact you. It is a celebration of Dave's life.

"That's why we're here, because he was so irritatingly positive all of the time. And we love him and that's why we're here."

Before the event, Mrs Myers said: "We have people coming from all over the country. We have people coming from Texas, from Malaysia, from all over Europe.

"Oh, it's endearing. It just helps me go through my process of grief because it just makes me feel that I'm not on my own with all this.

This article mentions that it’s illegal for a 13 year old to ride a motorcycle but of course nothing will be done about it, not to mention those aged 8 or 9 doing the same. In virtually all cases, it’s the parents who are to blame for allowing/encouraging their children to ride the bikes in the first place.

Motorcycle manufacturing output decline set to persist
Thailand's motorcycle manufacturing output will continue to decelerate in the second half of this year amid the high level of household debt and the weak economy, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Under the current economic circumstances, it would be difficult for the motorcycle industry to record a significant increase in total motorcycle production, but the FTI still maintains its projection for this year's manufacturing target, said Surapong Paisitpatanapong, vice-chairman of the FTI and spokesman for the federation's Automotive Industry Club.

"We are facing household debt problems which dampen consumer purchasing power, along with people's concerns over the sluggish economy, causing them to be more cautious about spending," he said.
