Hua Hin To Start Charging For Chatchai Parking From 15 Feb

Post by Big Boy »

It looks as though parking on the road that becomes the Night Market each night will be charged at between 5 and 20฿ per hour starting Wednesday.

Personally, it doesn't bother me - I stopped using that area years ago because of inadequate parking. Available parking spaces or not, I have found alternatives, and will not be returning.

Well, I park there to visit the pharmacy, never a problem parking after about 13.00. Most of those parking are those that work in the market, are delivering, parking to buy in the market or have an interest in the shops in the road. Wonder what they think about this? I wonder how it will affect businesses there?

Where has this been announced?

It was in Hua Hin Today - possibly elsewhere, though I only saw it in HHT.

The main info, I would say, was the following:
The fees for parking near Chatchai Market, which is the main fresh market in the centre of Hua Hua, will range from 5 baht to 20 baht per hour, depending on the vehicle type and the amount of time the vehicle has been parked.

Hua Hin’s mayor, Mr. Nopporn Wutthikul, on Friday (Feb 9) announced that the council had met with vendors from Torung Market (the night market) and Chatchai Market.

Doesn’t sound too unreasonable, although the provision of parking spaces is generally an issue in many/most areas of the Town centre.

But where will the vendors park? Surely they will be displaced and just cause congestion elsewhere? There are always consequences when charging zones are introduced. And isn't 08.30 a bit late to start parking controls at the market? They have already lost some vendors because of rent increases, who now operate from home and despatch orders by post or for for collection (dried produce / nuts etc).

It probably means I won't bother going there in future either. I require a few costly meds, and have always bought the single most expensive item elsewhere, as the cost can't be matched in Hua Hin. But I was happy to get other stuff from the market pharmacy, which was generally still cheaper than elsewhere in town. I will just get everything sent to me in future.

But if you park there in a car for 1 hour it’s going to cost you B10 - is that a big issue?

Not at all, but I just can't be bothered with it and I can't see the point of it, bikes and pick ups will just park on the other unaffected roads and make them worse. I also think it's the thin edge of the wedge, and that prices will increase - who are the collected fees going to and how will they be used? Currently, there is a nice free window to use as the day market winds down up until they start preparing for the night market, and I am not the only expat that uses that period to visit the pharmacy, for free, as I like it.

The large pharmacy in that soi is Gee An Teung (unless there's also another one). There's also a large one on phetchkasem nearby, but parking would be even harder. However the two (Gee An Teung) G supermarkets (Chomsin and Bon Kai) have car parking and also have pharmacy counters. They may have the medicine required but will order in if necessary (Chomsin offered to do this for me).

It says the parking charges finish at 15:30, so wouldn't there still be a gap before the night market starts setting up?

That might make a difference, as some stalls start setting up before then, and presumably they will now have to wait. Currently, the traders make no concessions to any cars still there when they start preparing for the market. Ans some of the shops on that stretch also start bringing out stalls as well. If I can't get there before 3pm, I don't bother going.

Thanks for the info about other pharmacies, but many don't stock what I need, and if they do, often the price is too high. The parking thing is just a quirk of mine. I wouldn't worry about it. If you are ever prescribed meds where the price is very high, and if you don't already know, the numerous pharmacies around Siriraj Hospital in Bkk is a good place to get meds at very low prices. You would be amazed at the difference in prices charged by the massive Fascino in that area, compared to elsewhere in Bkk and their branch at MV in Hua Hin. Obviously there are other on-line places as well.

Off Topic, but have you tried the pharmacy across from Baan Khun Por? We find it to the best at the moment and is currently our go-to pharmacy.

Thanks, but like I say, it's not a big deal for me, and I doubt they will stock what I require. Or if they do, at a price that is cheaper than what I pay currently. To put that in perspective, the pharmacy by the market said they could order it, but the price they quoted was 500 baht more per pack of 28 tabs, than what I pay at Siriraj, and if for some reason, one pharmacy is out of stock, I can go to another, or rather, Pam does, and order it from them at the same price.

Sorry guys, still off topic, but Mrs BB has just nipped up to the Bon Kai Gee An Teung pharmacy. and was told they have closed their pharmacy service. They re-directed her to the pharmacy opposite Baan Khun Por
