Especially when I pass the petrol stations every day.

EVs (BEVs) aren't for everyone. BUT, everyone should test drive, or better, lease one for a week, and judge for themselves.

I was quite ignorant before I bought one, now, not so much.

Forgot, the ZS EV is just a tad more, than the top end ICE version, unless you are dumb enough to want a sunroof in a tropical country

A few more bells & whistles, but I don't use the ones I have now, and same with the ICE version of the cars I've owned. They, options also seem to garnish the most complaints of all vehicles. Manufacturers have the drivetrains down to a science of late. Only the crappiest autos have drivetrain issues.

And if not into small family SUV, then the sportier looking MG4 is available. Same price, a bit more, and even cheaper than some of the top end version of the 'made in TH' JP badge 4 cyl junk available here.

Want more specs, then BYD still comes in at about the same price as the imports from JP.

There’s a note of desperation in some of the pro-EV posts. EVs are simply an inferior product which most potential buyers don’t want. My Toyota petrol hybrid is very economical, has a range of over 400 miles, and will have a strong residual value. I have no concerns about finding a charging station, and spending lots of time hanging around places that I don’t want to . I just go to the garage and five minutes later I’m good for 400-450 miles.
If an EV suits your needs then buy one but leave me alone!

I find that not commenting on topics that I'm not interested in is a good way of being left alone.

I am interested in the topic.
I just wish Governments around the world would leave their citizens to decide what sort of car suits their needs best. If they did, EVs would be gone.

I can fill my Terra up and drive all the way to Chiang Mai without having to fill up on a hot summers day driving conservatively. Have not heard of an EV that can realistically achieve over 600km.
Happy to admit that an EV would meet 95% of my regular needs but not economical to change a four year old vehicle given my annual max 15k mileage.
My Thai niece just bought a BYD Seal here in Hua Hin. It has a range of 650 km. Mercedes Benz already have a model with a 1,000 km range.

The big difference is that the Seal is about B1.5m whereas the Mercedes is nearly B5m.

You mean the govts of elected official by the people, to carry out their wishes, for the people .... those govt's 8)

Stand on any congested city street, aside from the noise, just suckin' in fumes, and my vote would be all vehicles in say, Bangkok, have to be EVs. Of course I'd also make in mandatory for every roof to have solar panels feeding the grid.

Don't worry, as you'll have access to ICEVs as long as you want. Fossil fuel conglomerates are making sure of that. Restricting any real alternative energy sources with their tight grip of puppets in govt.

If not for CH and us thrifty shoppers, EVs would have been dead a long time ago. The same folks restricting the growth, are shooting themselves in the foot, with high price & records profits.

Big part of why I have solar & EVs is pure spite, against PEA & PTT/Bangchak. I hate monopolies, and will avoid giving them my baht, no matter what.

That I'm saving 6-8k baht a month in the process, is just icing on the cake

EV fires are almost impossible to extinguish, burn at very high temperatures, and for long periods of time, sometimes days. Battery powered cars really are a crap idea.
I'm sorry, but you suspect wrong.

There's actually very little doubt about it - EV's are less fire prone than ICE vehicles. In fact, they're 11 times (or more) less likely to catch fire, according to the statistics from various safety-related organizations.

Here are some examples:
Pinfa (Phosphorous, Inorganic and Nitrogen Flame Retardants Association) suggested around 55 fires per billion miles traveled in ICEs compared to 5 fires per billion miles traveled for EVs.
A recent study conducted by AutoInsuranceEZ using data from the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) showed that electric cars in the US caught fire at a rate of 25.1 per 100,000 sales compared to 1,530 for ICE vehicles ...
https://www.idtechex.com/en/research-ar ... atic/25749
The MSB went on to show that, as a proportion of all EVs on the roads versus all ice cars on the roads, petrol and diesel vehicles were almost 20 times more likely to catch fire than electric-powered machines.

Meanwhile, EV FireSafe, an Australian company, studied global data on the reports of EV fires from 2010 to 2022, concluding that there was a 0.0012 per cent chance of a passenger EV catching fire, compared to 0.1 per cent for an ice vehicle, a far higher (but still tiny) level of risk — 80 times greater, in fact.

As for electric car fires being more difficult to put out, that's true but they don't necessarily do more damage. In fact, two of the biggest vehicle conflagrations in the UK in recent years (where in each case over 1,200 cars were destroyed) were started by parked ICE vehicles in multi-storey car parks.

Gentlemen,
I appreciate the humour and the feedback. But unfortunately physics always wins. EVs are garbage.

EV range claims made by manufacturers seem to be as reliable as their mpg claims for their ICEV’s. Pretty much all of the motoring press pour scorn on these figures. So MB have an EV that is supposed to give you 1k km at what price! Currently EV’s appear to be for the wealthy who have large enough houses and can afford solar panels and save each month more than most Thai’s would spend in three on household electricity.
Cities are ideal places for EV’s due to shorter distances and less direct pollution but how many have the luxury of a garage or off street parking do they can plug in their vehicle to charge it.
The infrastructure is improving and EV use will increase but ICEV’s are not going to go away for a long time particularly in rural areas.
I am still trying to get my head around B7, V-power, gasohol, 95RON etc and was very happy with petrol or diesel. Adding KWh, Volts Watts and amps just causes more confusion. Things will and are changing but I am sure the ICE will outlive me.

Agree with some of that, and the range, is usually offered by testing sites. Though tested at lower speeds than many would drive, and surely in perfect conditions, without accessories (AC/heat) on, just guessing.

Seems buying, owning an EV is very dependent on where one lives. In TH, it's great, both buy in price, and cost to energize, whether by grid at home or on the road. Solar being affordable here is a real plus, and makes owning a no brainer for us, since having.

Two rating frequently giving (non USA), and for our MG ZS, they are;
... NEDC @ 403 kms (Not Even Damn Close)
... WLTP @ 320 kms ... which we consistently beat locally while driving 30-60-90 kph.

WLTP being more realistic. We get about 300 kms per charge at highway speeds / 90 kph (TH's speed limit)
https://www.lifewire.com/ev-ranges-expl ... 0estimates.

So MG's range ratings are quite accurate, as we consistent pass the 320 kms, and have even gotten more that 403 kms, though very rare on the latter.

We drive in 'ECO'' mode exclusively, and provides more than enough power & performance. Less range in 'Normal' or 'Sport' mode. Also need to understand the regen tech, as will increase your range, considerably.

Those in colder weather will suffer a bit of range, or so I read, along with running the heater. AC doesn't seem to use much at all. Cruise control also doesn't seem to effect it much, although it dies disengage 'regen' when used, and that will make a difference, when not on open roads.

Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread

Post by Dannie Boy »

An interesting article regarding the lifetime environmental impact of BEV cars - the short answer is that they contribute far less emissions than ICE cars and the gap will grow as technology improves. Also mentioned in the article is confirmation that currently, BEV’s do cost more than an equivalent ICE car - that may change in the future as technology improves and scale reduces costs.

Please Khun LA no need to mention the benefits of driving an EV, you’ve already done so - this is just about purchase price.

A new question. Are BEV's more restricted concerning water depth on the roads than ICE's? That's a valid concern here.

I would imagine with the electric motor it would be sensitive to splash, spray, snow much more than an ICE vehicle.
